Ten grabs Torchwood (twice!)

Channel Ten has secured Torchwood after the ABC passed on picking it up.

The Dr Who spinoff was too racy for the ABC which couldn’t find an available timeslot after 8:30pm.

Torchwood is a thriller sci-fi cop show with a very human heart,” said Amber Knight, Senior Sales Manager for BBC Worldwide Australasia. “It’s sexy, clever, wild and perfect for TEN’s audience.”

Torchwood brings a sexy new twist to the traditional cop show genre that we at TEN are thrilled to have as part of our 2007 slate,” added Beverly McGarvey, head of programming at Network Ten.

Whatsmore, TEN has committed to a second series, currently in production.

Some TV Tonight readers are divided over whether the series is any good or not. Check them out here.

  1. I haven’t seen all of Season 1. I’m finding Torchwood really quite strange, but enjoying it a lot.

But I agree with Jack’s comment. Owen is a singularly alienating character – ahem, excuse the pun. Seriously (oh, I’m doing it again), no he is. I don’t find it likely, either, that someone of Gwen’s character goes for him. But then, maybe someone like Gwen is able to see good, niceness and attractiveness in him. I’m not like Gwen. Ianto does need much more screen time. He seems interesting as well as quite an attractive person.

I don’t feel, either, that the ‘team’ is really working well like a team so far. Perhaps that is a first-series thing, the actors themselves still getting to know each other. But it’s in the plots and scripts as well. Fighting crime or evil does, I think, need a well-gelled team with members who trust and like each other, even if they don’t always agree.

  2. I am so excited that it’s going to be aired here! I thought it would’ve been aired on the ABC but obviously not. Hopefully it will be aired not too late at night.

  3. Well, of course I am thrilled with this news … and even more so that they are committed to the Second Season as well. Although the first season did have it’s ups and downs I think that season two will be more consistant … but season 1 was still very, very good.

I thought that there was a lack of focus on Captain Jack and too much focus on Owen Harper (who I don’t really like). The final episodes did make up for that though. I would also like to see more of Ianto … lots more!

Still, great to hear that it will remin on free-to-air TV in Australia and hopefully in a reasonable time slot!!!
    Jack!

  4. Fantastic news that Australia will see Torchwood on free to air tv.

We have seen the commercial channels commitment to sci-fi tv over the years, and I have to say, they havn’t been very commited, especially channel 9 when they screen Star Trek, in all it’s genres, late at night, with a start time that never matched the guide due to the constant over run of the footy show before hand. And also with Enterprise, as recently as the end of the last year, placing it at a 1am timeslot on a sunday night! WHATS WITH THAT!

Anyway, where am i going with this, well, Doctor Who viewers (Fans), have always been well treated and respected by the ABC with their Doctor Who scheduling of late, from their screening the classic episodes from “An Unearthly Child / The Tribe of Gum”, to “Survival”, thru to the Chris Eccleston and David Tennant seasons in prime time on a saturday night, Channel 10 – Please don’t stuff this up, Torchwood is a fantastic series, that viewers deserve a firm commitment to see in order from start to finish, while in the next breath, I say, Thanks for picking it up, im sure you will be rewarded with the decision.
