[SBS/10:20pm] Classic Albums: Nirvana – Nevermind. There possibly isn’t an album in history that is as genre defining as Nirvana’s Nevermind. Released in 1991, it single-handedly was responsible for the birth of what became known as grunge and has gone on to sell over 8 million copies in the US alone. As part of the SBS VIP Pass music season the documentary Classic Albums: Nirvana – Nevermind shows us the history and making of this highly influential second album from the American grunge band. Classic Albums: Nirvana – Nevermind catapulted Nirvana from relative obscurity to the heights of commercial and critical success virtually overnight. It radically altered the musical landscape, shifting the focus away from the hair metal of the 1980s, and giving rise to the grunge movement which dominated the first few years of the 1990s. In the wake of its success, other Seattle bands such as Pearl Jam and Soundgarden would go on to have hit albums as well, and other alternative rock artists were suddenly being played on the radio and courted by record labels. This documentary Classic Albums: Nirvana – Nevermind features interviews with surviving band members, producer Butch Vig, members of the DCG promotions team, and representatives from Sub Pop records. Collectively, they deconstruct the creation of the landmark album and give insight into the luminary Kurt Cobain who touched millions of dysfunctional and disillusioned youths. They delve deeper into the architectural design Kurt envisioned for the album by describing how Kurt’s vocals acted as a glue to bring the tracks together by utilising their sounds even more so than their meanings, all along focusing on a child-like simplicity. Classic Albums: Nirvana – Nevermind features live footage of key tracks such as Lithium, Polly, Drain You, and Smells Like Teen Spirit which complement the various interviews. Nirvana’s surviving members Krist Novoselic (bass) and Dave Grohl (drums) talk candidly about the past, the recording of Nevermind and about Kurt Cobain and the legacy that he has left behind.

[ABC/7:30pm] Planet Earth. Final. Oceans cover two thirds of the planet, yet remain largely unexplored. For animals that dwell on the surface or within the deepest abyss, it’s finding food and conserving energy that is paramount. Off Venezuela, a 30 tonne whale shark is filmed gorging on a school of fish rather than its normal plankton diet. Then the fearsome oceanic white tip shark, fast becoming a global rarity, hunts the uppermost 100 metres of the sea alone, whilst fast-moving pods of dolphins charge en masse in search of prey. Planet Earth’s unique overhead heli-gimbal camera reveals the impressive swimming prowess of ocean dwelling common dolphins as they rocket at more than 30 kilometres an hour. The nocturnal upward migration of billions of plankton near Hawaii is eagerly awaited by giant manta rays gorging in the darkness. In Costa Rica, the night hides squadrons of squid, desperately dodging the sonar of hunting spotted dolphins. Off the coast of Mexico the first ever time lapse footage taken 2,000 metres down reveals eels and crabs. Giant woodlice-like isopods devour a large carcass, completely consuming it within three hours. Finally, extraordinary images capture the moment when more than 100 exquisite, three-metre sailfish hunt down their prey in a perfectly choreographed dance of death.
[ABC/8:30pm] Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple. New Series. “Sleeping Murder”. Gwenda Halliday (Sophia Myles) arrives in England from India and is met by Hugh Hornbeam (Aidan McArdle), who works for her fiancé. And Hornbeam seeks family friend Miss Marple (Geraldine McEwan) who realises that Gwenda is recalling a repressed memory of a murder she witnessed as a child. Further investigation reveals that Gwenda did live in Hillside when she was very young, and that her father Kelvin (Julian Wadham) had moved there after the death of her mother. That is, until his new fiancée Helen (Anna-Louise Plowman) suddenly disappeared. Kelvin then took his own life and Gwenda was sent to India to live with relatives. Miss Marple tracks down Gwenda’s uncle Dr James Kennedy (Phil Davis) and Mrs Paggett (Una Stubbs), the previous cook at Hillside, who tells them that Helen was a singer in a musical troupe called The Funnybones. One by one, Gwenda and Hornbeam seek out the group members to quiz them. They meet Dickie (Paul McGann) and Janet Erskine (Dawn French), who were in charge of the troupe and now run a guest house, Jackie Afflick (Martin Kemp), the sleazy pianist, and Evie Balantyne (Sarah Parish), who now headlines at the Palladium. They also meet shy local solicitor Walter Fane (Peter Serafinowicz), who was The Funnybones’ devoted fan and close friend of Helen’s. Miss Marple and her fellow sleuths are convinced that Helen was murdered and waste no time in coaxing local detective Inspector Primer (Russ Abbot) into re-opening the case. Miss Marple eventually encourages Inspector Primer to gather all the suspects in a room and from there explains what happened on the fateful night the Funnybones parted company and their beautiful singer disappeared forever.

[SBS/9:30pm] Hooray For Bollywood: The Rising – The Ballad Of Mangal Pandey – This film follows the life of Mangal Pandey a sepoy (Indian infantryman) and his progression from a disciplined, conscientious soldier into a violent mutineer. Pandey’s long-standing, close friend, William Gordon, a young Scottish officer, had assured Pandey that the cartouches were free of animal products but when this was revealed to be untrue, Pandey abruptly severed his links with his friend and began his revolt against the British. Ultimately it was this revolt that brought down the East India Company and eventually India’s rule reverted to the British Crown. One Response

  1. THE WEST WING

I can’t believe how brilliant this show is! I only started watching it, by mistake, a few weeks ago and I am now addicted! (I dare not go back to watch the previous years).
The episode last week of the DEBATE was exceptional, and suposedly went live to air in the US … amazing performances from Alan Alda and Jimmy Smits! We need more shows with such intelligent writing and performances rather than endless crime and medical shows (very tedious).
    Jack!
