Australia’s got Talent?

A twelve year old vocalist has been declared the winner of Australia’s Got Talent.

Bonnie Anderson may be a diva in waiting, and with the leg-up of $250,000 and network adulation she wouldn’t be out of place making star demands.

Anderson defeated a gum-leaf blower. Yep, a gum-leaf blower. Well, I guess he put the ‘Australia’ in Australia’s Got Talent.

But seriously, is this the best we have to offer?

This is a show which harks back to the days of variety and vaudeville. Some of the acts were unapologetically old-fashioned with their bag of tricks: jugglers, magicians, sword-swallowers, singers and dancers.

As with any reality talent shows deserving contestants don’t necessarily make it to the end, and while there is talent amongst the final bunch, not all of them have the point of difference upon which the show lays. Here was a chance to unveil some legitimate non-Idol performers.

But a gum-leaf blower? What showbiz engagements are going to pay his rent? And there are plenty of talented 12 year olds at shopping centre quests the land over.

I guess I thought there would be some eye-popping, staggering acts that never had an opportunity to strut their stuff. You know, that rare one-of-a-kind performer that deserves a real career.

But no, it seems we love kids singing songs that were meant for black divas in American musicals.

Maybe the show, fronted by the host with more exuberance than Kermit the Frog, just needs a new title.

Or a question mark.
