Irwin enters Hall of Fame…and South Park bumps

Steve Irwin is to be inducted into the Logies Hall of Fame.

Irwin’s wildlife documentaries were popular across the globe, even more so than the following he had in Australia.

The induction follows a posthumous award given to Irwin as Best Male Presenter at last night’s subscription TV ASTRA Awards.

The timing of the two awards has prompted SBS to re-schedule its upcoming South Park episode in which Irwin is lampooned. Last year there was much criticism of the animated comedy for depicting Irwin so soon after his death (which, ironically is precisely what a character in the show also says).

Until yesterday the “Hell on Earth 2006” episode was readied for airing, unedited, on Monday May 7. Except that’s the night after the Logies.

SBS has recognised the timing will attract further media interest and pushed it back by one week.

South Park’s “Hell on Earth 2006” will now air on Monday May 14.

Press Release:

TV WEEK announced today that the late and legendary Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, will be inducted into the prestigious TV WEEK Hall Of Fame at this year’s TV WEEK Logie Awards.

Steve is being recognised by the TV WEEK Hall Of Fame for his involvement in revolutionising the wildlife-documentary industry.

Steve was a passionate conservationist, naturalist and TV presenter. He was loved by Australians and his millions of fans around the world. A panel of television-industry professionals chose Steve for the Hall Of Fame honour.

Terri Irwin, Steve’s wife, will be accepting the Hall Of Fame award on Steve’s behalf at the Logie Awards. Terri told TV WEEK, “Our documentaries started airing in Australia and we were only ever going to do one episode about crocodiles and, in a very short period of time, we’d done 10 episodes to tremendous ratings.

“Changing the face of television and bringing wildlife back into people’s living rooms in a hands-on way was so important to him. We’ve become so divorced from wildlife in recent history. I think he had a great message and it’s really a point of pride that Steve was one of the pioneers in changing how documentaries are filmed.”

The TV WEEK Hall Of Fame award is presented to a nationally known individual or program for an outstanding and sustained contribution to Australian television. Recipients of this award will have shown commitment and passion through their work, ultimately contributing to the enrichment of Australian television.

TV WEEK editor Emma Nolan said: “We couldn’t be happier that Steve Irwin has been inducted into the Hall Of Fame. He made an amazing contribution to the television industry and was much loved in Australia and around the world.”

The 2007 TV WEEK Logie Awards boast an impressive line-up of guest presenters, hosts and performers already announced, including Australian actress Rachel Griffiths, NCIS star Michael Weatherly, key presenters Adam Hills, Dave Hughes and Fifi Box and green-room hosts Hamish Blake and Andy Lee. Also confirmed are international performers Avril Lavigne and James Morrison, 2006 Australian Idol winner Damien Leith, red-carpet host Jules Lund and his co-presenters, Livinia Nixon and Jackie O.

The 2007 TV WEEK Logie Awards will be held on Sunday, May 6, at Crown Entertainment Complex and televised on the Nine Network.
