World Premiere: The King

The World Premiere of The King, the biopic on the late Graham Kennedy, will take place in Melbourne on May 1 by invitation.

TV1 has produced the telemovie which it airs on May 20, five days before the anniversary of Kennedy’s death.

Nine will screen it sometime afterwards.

Actor Stephen Curry (Changi) plays Kennedy and Stephen Hall (After the Deluge) will play Bert Newton.

Directed by Matt Saville (We Can Be Heroes, The Surgeon), it also stars Shaun Micallef, Garry McDonald, Steve Bisley, Todd McDonald, Bernard Curry, Jane Allsop (as Noeline Brown), Monica Maughan and Angus Sampson (as Ugly Dave Gray). Actress Cathy Godbold will play her mother Rosemary Margan.

Shot in Melbourne, the filmakers recreated Kennedy’s IMT and Blankety Blanks studios in the ABC’s Ripponlea studios.

The World Premiere will take place at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, Federation Square.
