Congratulations! 50 Years of Bert

Bert Newton today celebrates fifty years on Australian TV.

It is an amazing achievement by a consumate talent.

Newton started his career on 3XY Radio and his first tv gig was on Channel Seven’s The Late Show.

But it was on Nine’s In Melbourne Tonight that he made his mark, alongside Graham Kennedy. He has hosted and appeared on an array of shows including The Don Lane Show, New Faces, Ford Superquiz, Good Morning Australia, Bert’s Family Feud, The Bert Newton Show, Tonight with Bert Newton, 20 to 1 on Nine, Seven and TEN.

Newton is still the best Logies host and one of television’s best interviewers. In the business he has achieved a reputation as a nice guy and an absolute pro.

This week he is again nominated for the Gold Logie.

Congrats on an amazing achievement.

  1. Hm interesting comment. Maybe he had an appearance on the May 3 episode?

Disappointingly I didn’t receive any info from Nine to mark Bert’s achievement. It would have been far more welcome than news on his travelling toupee.

  2. i think the PR people (channel 9?) who decided that Bert’s TV career started on 3 May 1957 didn’t quite do their research! In the Graham Kennedy biography “King” (among other sources), Noel Ferrier was the initial host of “The Late Show” on Channel 7 from that date. Bert only took over hosting the show in late August when Ferrier was going into hospital.
