This documentary follows how this burgeoning phenomenon became a national pastime, showing how “going naked” peculiarly became a cheeky British preoccupation. It shows how some of the most unlikely people do the most extraordinary things in the name of charity. Some of the 200 naked calendars were tasteful, some were sexy, some tacky, some funny, others less than funny. There were spectacular successes and outright failures. Discussing her lead role in The Queen, Helen Mirren reveals that, despite being raised by anti-monarchist parents, she does have compassion for Her Majesty, referring to her as a strong and iconic person – ‘The oak we all recognise’. Parkinson: “What would your late dad actually be thinking if he heard you say that now?” Helen Mirren: “My dad was vehemently anti-monarchist – and my mum, but really what they were was anti the class system, and obviously the Royal Family is the apex of the structure that is the class system. And they suffered under the class system, as basic working class people in London before the war, during the war, after the war.” Talking to fellow guest Helen Mirren, Dame Edna asks if there is a naked scene in The Queen. Helen Mirren: “No, but the Queen does appear in her nightdress, and indeed in a dressing gown. But in a dressing gown that was bought at Harrods.” Later in the discussion on underwear and the benefits of ‘Big Knickers’, Dame Edna reveals that she is not wearing any underwear. “To tell you the truth I’m going to use a rather unacceptable term now on your show. You may not know this expression, but I am going commando tonight!” she told a shocked Parkinson.

[SBS/7:30pm] Homo Futurus is a documentary about the new, non-evolutionary theory of the story of mankind – our origins and our future. What made early humans stand up and take their first steps? What is the next step in human development? These are some of the questions raised by this documentary which takes a new non-Darwinian look at our history. Two researchers, paleontologist Anne Dambricourt-Malassé and orthodontist Marie-Josèphe Deshayes, have uncovered a curious fact about the sphenoid, a small bone at the base of the skull. Over millions of years, each change in the sphenoid’s position brought a new species into our primate family. Dental records seem to point to a new change developing now, caused by alterations in the size and shape of our jaws. Does this mean that progression could be programmed into our cells? A number of scientists who challenge Darwinian evolution certainly think so. Homos Futurus considers whether we could we be evolving into yet another species. Rather than modern Homo sapiens being the realization of the species, are we really just a stage on the way to the end result? And if anti-Darwinian scientists are correct, what will our descendants look like?
[SBS/8:30pm] Biometrics From Orwell to Steven Spielberg, fiction and film has fed on, and even foreseen, technological and scientific “progress” in the field of identity control. Whilst you may not yet be ready to emulate Tom Cruise, who has an eye transplant in order to evade iris control in the film “Minority Report”, you may soon have to slip your finger into a fingerprint reader that will grant you access to your local cinema complex. The new French produced documentary Biometrics, screening on SBS Television on Sunday, May 6 at 8.30pm as part of the Future Focus season, invites viewers on a planetary journey to the “Brave New World” that is now a reality. The use of physical and behavioural biometric characteristics for identification purposes, such as fingerprints; retinas and irises; facial patterns and hand measurements; signature; gait; and typing patterns, is on the rise. Through interviews with researchers in biometrics and manufacturers and promoters of biometric techniques, this documentary examines the growing and varied uses of biometrics; border control, building access security and workplace checks, and the way biometrics is implemented to serve political, military and technological interests in countries including France, Japan, the UAE and Singapore. Issues including invasion of privacy, identity theft and system circumvention are also raised in this documentary about measuring human physiography and behaviour. Biometrics is part of SBS’ Future Focus – six weeks of innovative, insightful and thought-provoking programming dealing with environmental, scientific and social issues critical to our future on this earth, airing from 10 April 2007. For more information, see www.sbs.com.au.
[SBS/10:00pm] Movie: Silent Partner – Bill and John don’t have much going for them, a crumpled couple of friends on the slow side of up. They like their dog races and when the infamous Alex Silver offers them a chance to not only race a greyhound for him, but own it, the men jump at it. The instructions from Silver are severe: dope the dog. A study of male friendship in a couple of downers, Silent Partner is so well performed that you can excuse its insular, theatrical origins and its lack of cinematic dynamic. The close ups and the focus are part of the package. The actors deliver their characters with great dimension, and the writing is faultless observation. Directed by Alkinos Tsilimidos and stars Syd Brisbane and David Field. (Commissioned by SBSi, in English) (Drama) (2001) MA WS

[MovieOne/8:30pm] Movie: Brokeback Mountain (US 2005)
