It’s Kate!

Kate Ritchie has won her first Gold Logie.

In a win that was roundly applauded by the industry in the room, Ritchie won for her twenty years in Home and Away.

“I am forever having people stop me in the street and tell me that they know me and have watched me grow up,” she said. “Over the last few years I’ve realised its much more rewarding to do exactly what you feel is right and winning this tonight feels like I am on the right path and I’m going to continue that.”

Ritchie even acknowledged the difficulty of wearing “my first bra on the telly. Puberty wasn’t very kind too, lets face it. Finally I would like to thank my mum and dad who probably wonder why they sent me to that audition twenty years ago. I want to thank them for doing exaclty that because it has set me on my way and given me the most incredible journey.”

Ritchie won against a field of eight including sentimental favourite Rove McManus. He didn’t go home epmty-handed, winning Silver Logie for Most Popular Presenter and Most Popular Light Entertainment for Rove Live.

Home & Away also won for Silver Logie for Most Popular Drama plus Amy Matthews for Best New Female Talent. Aaron Jeffrey from McLeod’s Daughters won the Silver for Most Popular Male and a nod to Dustin Clare for Best New Male Talent from the same show.

Other awards went to Dancing with the Stars, NRL Footy Show, Thank God You’re Here, Lateline, The Terri Irwin Interview.

SBS also had Logie glory for 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany Italy v Australia and Susie Porter won Most Outstanding Actress for RAN: Remote Area Nurse. SBS also had wins for Emma Lung (Stranded)

The surprise of the night was the loss by The Chaser team (who behaved all night it seems). But voting had closed before the current season hit the new Wednesday timeslot.

Hosts Adam Hills and Dave Hughes had great success with their opening monologues. Fifi Box was shuffled into chat spots with the cast from Fantastic Four and Michael Wetherly. They weren’t much chop. At times she was so loud-and-emphasized I thought I was watching a kids’ show. Neither were the Green Room spots with Hamish and Andy. In fact given they are little more than a sponsor segment, and they drag out a long night even more, they should be axed.

Logie blunder moments would have to go to Aaron Jeffrey acknowledging McLeod’s “best boobs in the business.” And when Ioan Gruffudd told of growing up watching Neighbours and wanting to marry ‘Charlene,’ American actor Michael Chiklis asked if Charlene was “in the room?” And those filmed segments of Kerri-Anne Brand Power and the What’s Good For You alcohol test were pretty bland too.

Best moment: I thought the In memoriam sequence was nicely done, but the best moment was just the shot of the security TV Week brought in for The Chaser boys –Wilfred the dog, boozin’ at a table. Hilarious!

What was the Logies missing? A roaring, off-script acceptance speech or a show-stopping tell all presenter like Andrew Denton or Dame Edna.

In all, the young kids’ year played it very, very safe.

Red Carpet goss.

  1. I’m still a bit miffed by the popularity of McLeod’s Daughters. TV Week clearly loves the show, given the coverage it gives it in the magazine, although the producers and cast would have to be disappointed about taking home only two Logies from eight nominations (although admittedly the most they could have scored was six, since the two lead actresses were both nominated in two of the same categories).

  2. I thought Dave Hughes was one of the best Logies presenters since Denton. His humour was clever and topical – and his joke about Kyle Sandilands was hilarious. Adam Hills was ok, but he did a lot of those jokes on the Comedy Festival Gala only a few weeks back…… Hmmmmmmm. I guess Denton-like moments come once a decade, but at least last night was largely entertaining. 🙂

  3. I actually thought the show was not as hideous as I had expected. Adam Hills did a great job and even Dave Hughes, who I am not a huge fan of, did his routines well. I agree though that Hamish and Andy were wasted in their product placement segments. I think the show fell flat because a lot of the people who the public elevate to ‘celebrity’ status – and hence get to appear on these shows – possess absolutely no personality or can’t string two words together especially when drunk – and there seemed to be a fair bit of both of those tonight. And could someone please fix Susie Porter’s dress, we almost got an eyeful there! Even the producer of that Lateline news report, I mean just because she did a story on sexual harrassment did she really need to show a dress with breasts overflowing? I loved Sandra Sully though, only because she looked like Endora. And good on Kate Ritchie for winning – I am no fan of Home And Away (i’ve watched maybe 2 full episodes my whole life) but I think good on her she’s done the hard yards and deserves some recognition after 20 years and as she said having to go through puberty on television! I am stunned Thank God You’re Here didn’t win most popular entertainment program but am pleased it won the most outstanding.

  4. I was stunned but extremely pleased to see Kate win the Gold Logie!! Rove was clearly pleased, too, which is good! It’s amazing how she’s gone from being ignored for 17 years to winning back to back Silvers and now the Gold! Well done, Kate!!
