It’s Serbia!

Serbia has won Eurovision 2007!

Marija Šerifović took out the show with her power ballad ‘Moltiva.’ Serbia scored 268 points, defeating Ukraine (235), Russia (207) and Turkey (163).

It is Serbia’s first win.

Serbia’s act, which scored highly, seemed to resemble a lesbian act, an androgynous female surrounded by exotic women -and her voice soared.

At the bottom of the ladder were United Kingdom, France and Ireland.

In a rousing presentation from Helsinki, this year was dominated by the might of the Eastern European bloc countries. They also managed to oust a slew of Western European countries from the Semi-Final as qualifying for the Final.

Notable gimmicks this year included a bunch of old men singing, the flying mile high club, and several acts led by camp or drag performers, most especially Ukraine, Sweden and France (Denmark’s drag queen didn’t make it through to the Final).

As commentator Terry Wogan noted, the production from Finland was outstanding, overflowing with fireworks, lavish lighting and a gigantic, versatile set.

Critics will no doubt be calling for modifications to the voting system (once again!) to negate the power of the Eastern European bloc. Since the fall of the Russian Empire the string of new countries entering Eurovision sees them voting for their neighbours. But if truth be told, even the Western countries voted Serbia and Ukraine highly – so go figure.

And what about the change to the voting? Sure it’s quicker just hearing the 8, 10 and 12 pointers, but I miss ‘deux points!’

Finally, my top three were Germany, Serbia and Russia.

Goodnight, Helsinki! Thankyou for fabulous show! We congratulate you wonderful show! See you in Belgrade!

  1. It was a great trashy show last night, the girls from Russia were fantastic, very catchy song.
I don’t think Scooch will matter too much – they put in a fantastic performance but Eurovision is getting so political these days, its no surprise.
Scooch debuted at # 5 on the UK singles chart today, Pop is back in the charts again!

  2. Well, as I said previously, it is usually the freakiest act that wins … well they came second this time so I was almost right (Ukraine). So the “dikes on mikes” won … it was a good song but not the best. The songs were such crap this year apart from a few. What a disappointing show this year, though I was very amused that the trashy UK song came second last!
Won’t be bothering to buy the DVD this year, a waste of money. (Wish I hadn’t bought the CD too!)
    Jack!

  3. no worries David i understand 🙂 i kept away from all radio, TV and internet today (though i know you were keeping TVT spoiler free) just to avoid any spoilers.. i didn’t even trust Lee Lin Chin in her closing headlines from SBS News just incase she dropped the result.. And yet, SBS? Still no interval act?? I’m reluctantly OK with them putting in commercials, but there is no need to cut out stuff.

  4. Nope not at all…. I just didn’t want to approve (or even read) any comments between Sunday morning or Sunday night in case they had EV spoilers. Now the show is over I have approved a backlog of comments on all posts!

I didn’t want anybody ruining my EV night either!

  5. what i don’t get is, if these Eastern bloc countries all loved each other (as they voted) why did they split up in the first place? and Mr Knox did you censor my comment from the semi-final????? ploise explain 🙂
