TV Tonight: Logie Tips

Ok I have given some thought to the nominations and here’s my take on where the wins may go.

In considering the categories it is important to remember two things.

One is that the public vote is largely decided by readers of TV Week, which tend to be grocery buyers, generally younger and female. This is why we don’t see nominations that reflect actual ratings, and it remains something of an anomaly.

The second is that voting took place around February / March so it focusses on 2006 and largely overlooks recent airings. That said, here is my form guide.

TV WEEK GOLD LOGIE
Simmone Jade MacKinnon, McLeod’s Daughters
Rachael Carpani, McLeod’s Daughters
John Wood, Blue Heelers
Rove, Rove Live
Kate Richie, Home and Away
Natalie Blair, Neighbours
Bert Newton, Bert’s Family Feud, 20 to 1
John Howard, All Saints
It’s the weakest line up in years. John Wood had his year, the audience is divided over Bert and the McLeod’s audience will cancel each other out. Natalie Blair’s nod is generous at best, and John Howard is a respectful inaugural inclusion. It will go down to Kate Richie and Rove. Although his ratings for 2006 were not glorious, there is a sympathetic push to Rove. As the host of the most successful show all year, Daryl Somers was robbed (not that I’m saying I would vote for him!). SMS voting in the Race for Gold closes at 7:50pm Sunday. A pretty frock may help win it. Rove, we’re looking at you.

TV WEEK SILVER LOGIE ” Most Popular Actress
Natalie Bassingthwaighte (Neighbours, Network Ten)
Natalie Blair (Neighbours, Network Ten)
Rachael Carpani (McLeod’s Daughters, Nine Network)
Simmone Jade Mackinnon (McLeod’s Daughters, Nine Network)
Kate Ritchie (Home And Away, Channel Seven)
Kate will take this out again.

TV WEEK SILVER LOGIE ” Most Popular Actor
Brendan Cowell (Love My Way, W Channel)
Mark Furze (Home And Away, Channel Seven)
John Howard (All Saints, Channel Seven)
Aaron Jeffery (McLeod’s Daughters, Nine Network)
Paul O’Brien (Home And Away, Channel Seven)
It’s great to see Brendan Cowell nominated in a public vote category, but logic decrees John Howard to win this.

MOST POPULAR LIGHT ENTERTAINMENT PROGRAM
Bert’s Family Feud (Nine Network)
Deal Or No Deal (Channel Seven)
Rove Live (Network Ten)
Thank God You’re Here (Network Ten)
20 To 01 (Nine Network)
Thank God You’re Here deserves this for imagination and sheer ratings success. 20 to 1 shouldn’t even be here.

TV WEEK SILVER LOGIE ” Most Popular Presenter
Wil Anderson (The Glass House, ABC TV)
Grant Denyer (It Takes Two, Channel Seven)
Melissa Doyle (Sunrise, Channel Seven)
David Koch (Sunrise, Channel Seven)
Rove McManus (Rove Live, Network Ten)
Grant Denyer may come close here, otherwise I’d say Rove again. And where’s Sonia Kruger?

MOST POPULAR SPORTS PROGRAM
Before The Game (Network Ten)
The Footy Show AFL (Nine Network)
The Footy Show NRL (Nine Network)
RPM (Network Ten)
Sports Tonight (Network Ten)
Being the sports expert I am (not) The Footy Show NRL will probably again touchdown.

MOST POPULAR NEW FEMALE TALENT
Jolene Anderson (All Saints, Channel Seven)
Brooke Hanson (What’s Good For You, Nine Network)
Michelle Langstone (McLeod’s Daughters, Nine Network)
Amy Mathews (Home And Away, Channel Seven)
Jessica Tovey (Home And Away, Channel Seven)
Who, who and who? Toss a coin.

MOST POPULAR NEW MALE TALENT
Dustin Clare (McLeod’s Daughters, Nine Network)
Ben Lawson (Neighbours, Network Ten)
Bobby Morley (Home And Away, Channel Seven)
Chris Sadrinna (Home And Away, Channel Seven)
Andrew Supanz (All Saints, Channel Seven)
As Ben Lawson is the only guy I know that will have to do.

MOST POPULAR REALITY PROGRAM
Australian Idol (Network Ten)
Big Brother (Network Ten)
The Biggest Loser (Network Ten)
Dancing With The Stars (Channel Seven)
It Takes Two (Channel Seven)
Dancing with the Stars is a little out of place here (only the voting /elimination) makes it reality over variety. It’s the most successful show on TV and this is its sole nomination, but remember the magazine buyers may lean towards Australian Idol.

MOST POPULAR LIFESTYLE PROGRAM
Backyard Blitz (Nine Network)
Better Homes And Gardens (Channel Seven)
Getaway (Nine Network)
The Great Outdoors (Channel Seven)
What’s Good For You (Nine Network)
Better Homes and Gardens over Getaway.

MOST POPULAR AUSTRALIAN DRAMA
All Saints (Channel Seven)
Blue Heelers (Channel Seven)
Home And Away (Channel Seven)
McLeod’s Daughters (Nine Network)
Neighbours (Network Ten)
Home and Away.

MOST OUTSTANDING AWARDS
These are peer-voted and therefore don’t necessarily reflect ratings success.

TV WEEK SILVER LOGIE ” Most Outstanding Drama Series, Miniseries or Telemovie
Answered By Fire (ABC TV)
Love My Way (W Channel)
RAN: Remote Area Nurse (SBS)
The Silence (ABC TV)
The Society Murders (Network Ten)
Great nominees all round. RAN: Remote Area Nurse was excellent, Answered by Fire even better, but Love My Way will take a clean sweep for the third year.

TV WEEK SILVER LOGIE ” Most Outstanding Actor
Matthew Le Nevez (The Society Murders, Network Ten)
Ben Mendelsohn (Love My Way, W Channel)
Richard Roxburgh (The Silence, ABC TV)
David Wenham (Answered By Fire, ABC TV)
Dan Wyllie (Love My Way, W Channel)
Dan Wyllie over a tough choice from David Wenham.

TV WEEK SILVER LOGIE ” Most Outstanding Actress
Daniella Farinacci (The Society Murders, Network Ten)
Claudia Karvan (Love My Way, W Channel)
Asher Keddie (Love My Way, W Channel)
Judith McGrath (All Saints, Channel Seven)
Susie Porter (RAN: Remote Area Nurse, SBS)
Asher Keddie or Daniella Farinacci. I think Claudia has had her run.

MOST OUTSTANDING NEWS COVERAGE
“Escaping The Border” (ABC TV News)
“Escaping The Mine” (Sunrise, Channel Seven)
“Scully Sacking” (Nine Network News)
“Sexual Abuse In Aboriginal Communities” (Lateline, ABC TV)
“Sexual Abuse Of The Elderly” (Lateline, ABC TV)
Either of those Lateline stories because they are more worthy.

MOST OUTSTANDING PUBLIC AFFAIRS REPORT
“Abu Ghraib” (Dateline, SBS)
“Four Days In Dili” (Dateline, SBS)
The Great Escape: Brant Webb And Todd Russell (Nine Network)
“The Mourning After” (Australian Story, ABC TV)
The Terri Irwin Interview (Nine Network)
Dateline but its a toss-up which one… Four Days in Dili because it’s closer to our shores.

MOST OUTSTANDING DOCUMENTARY
The Battle Of Long Tan (The History Channel)
The Bridge At Midnight Trembles (SBS)
The Floating Brothel (ABC TV)
Life At 1 (ABC TV)
Who Killed Dr Bogle And Mrs Chandler? (ABC TV)
Who Killed Dr Bogle and Mrs Chandler just ahead of The Battle of Long Tan.

MOST OUTSTANDING FACTUAL SERIES
Border Security (Channel Seven)
Dynasties (ABC TV)
Jamie’s Kitchen Australia (Network Ten)
Peking To Paris (ABC TV)
RPA (Nine Network)
I didn’t see it but I’ll go out on a limb and pick Peking to Paris. Can’t see Border Security getting this, it’s morals will let it down.

MOST OUTSTANDING COMEDY PROGRAM
The Chaser’s War On Everything (ABC TV)
The Glass House (ABC TV)
Spicks & Specks (ABC TV)
Stupid Stupid Man (TV1)
Thank God You’re Here (Network Ten)
Well it will be an ABC show that’s pretty clear. Despite voting closing before it started this year, I think The Chaser’s War on Everything is pretty safe, but there could be a sentimental protest vote for The Glass House.

MOST OUTSTANDING SPORTS COVERAGE
3 Mobile Ashes Series, Second Test (Nine Network)
The Australian Open 2006 (Channel Seven)
2006 FIFA World Cup Germany “ Italy v Australia (SBS)
2006 Olympic Winter Games (Channel Seven)
2006 Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 (Network Ten)
Again my forte…. umm, the 2006 Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 because motor racing is harder to shoot (and weren’t some of those others just international feeds?)

MOST OUTSTANDING CHILDREN’S PROGRAM
Blue Water High (ABC TV)
Camp Orange: Slimey Hollow (Nickelodeon)
H20: Just Add Water (Network Ten)
Mortified (Nine Network)
The Upside Down Show (Nick Jr)
Blue Water High or Mortified.

GRAHAM KENNEDY AWARD FOR MOST OUTSTANDING NEW TALENT
Emily Barclay (The Silence, ABC TV)
Aaron Fa’aoso (RAN: Remote Area Nurse, SBS)
Emma Lung (Stranded, SBS)
Sam Parsonson (Love My Way, W Channel)
Alex Tilman (Answered By Fire, ABC TV)
Sam Parsonson or Emma Lung.

  1. Well the 2007 Logies have been and gone for another year!!
Sonia Kruger won the red carpet award for best dressed in a understaded yet fetching silver frock ( still searching for fabric for 2 replicas), Patti’s frock was stunning though the $18,000 brooch was a little to much, i wonder if Bert wears it?? He will will next year i predict!
Kates Richies speech said it all for me after almost 20 years in Home and Away, ( and by soap standards thats 47 lifetimes),Kate looked happy proud and like she wanted to win!! I wept when i thought she was stabbed and to pull off a whole summer of not knowing if Sally was dead or alive is mystery only television soapie addicts can thrive on!! Natalie Blair stay in Neighbours, you’ll make it and to Rove, the Belinda Emmett tribute was touching and made us weep here at the Preston Poof Posse Palace with 2 drag queens, some lovely women, 4 gay men and 3 lucious lesbians we thought all presenters were timely but more stuff ups next year!!

Congratulations to all the people involved in the tv and the whole god damn media!!

  2. Yes I expect the Chaser boys to do something fitting with TV of the last year. Maybe they will be boning each other. Maybe they will bring WaWa along. They’ll turkey slap each other. Or something that derides TV Week itself.

  3. I love The Chaser and Spicks & Specks but I really hope The Glass House wins for most outstanding comedy program – it deserves some recognition! Without it there is no way Dave Hughes would be a host. So fingers crossed for the sentimental protest vote! I would also love for Wil Anderson to win a Logie, but I’m not that much of an optimist.

  4. I’m on the red carpet tomorrow, see if I can ask Claudia if she stops for me, ok?

I have interviewed John Edwards before but not sure if he reads this blog.

  5. Love My Way! Love My Way!!! John…Claudia…please go to at least series 5. Thats it. A nice round number to keep the series at Cult status for the future!!

Do you think they read this?

  6. Easy… the category is public voted and is for Most Popular not Best. If it was best I’d be going for Love My Way. I agree All Saints is H&A’s toughtest competition, but this is voted by TV Week readers.
