Helpmann Awards live on Bio

The Biography Channel will broadcast the Helpmann Awards, Australia’s own Tony Awards, live on Monday August 6.

The ceremony from the Capitol Theatre, Sydney, has nominated productions including Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Eurobeat.

Hosted by actor Jonathan Biggins, the broadcast continues a long-running relationship between Foxtel and the Helpmanns.

The only place to see the 2007 Helpmann Awards is live and exclusive on FOXTEL’S Bio channel on Monday August 6, at 8.30pm EST.

This year’s awards will be broadcast direct from the Capitol Theatre, Sydney, in a two hour gala spectacular hosted by Australian actor Jonathan Biggins.

The 2007 Helpmann Awards will be the most glamorous night of the theatre season with dozens of stage and screen stars on hand to present the prestigious awards. The ceremony will also include special appearances and performances by the casts of Billy Elliott, Company, Dead Man Walking, Eurobeat, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Miss Saigon, and Priscilla Queen of the Desert – The Musical.

Similar to the Tony Awards on Broadway and the Olivier Awards in London, The Helpmann Awards annually recognise distinguished artistic achievement and excellence in the many disciplines of Australia’s vibrant live performance sectors, including musical theatre, contemporary music, comedy, opera, classical music, dance and physical theatre.

The Helpmann Awards, established in 2001 by Live Performance Australia (LPA) are named in honour of Sir Robert Helpmann to commemorate his memory and achievements.

There are a total of 41 categories at this year’s Helpmann Awards. The Helpmann Awards also incorporate the JC Williamson Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Australian live performance industry.

Jon Nicholls is Executive Producer of The 2007 Helpmann Awards and Wayne Harrison will direct the Award Ceremony with Max Lambert as Musical Director.
