My ‘stupid’ Character

Neighbours actor Kyal Marsh, who plays Boyd Hoyland, has criticised the show’s producers over the direction of his character.

Marsh is unhappy that Boyd was made to cheat on his wife ‘Janae’ (Eliza Taylor-Cotter).

“I thought it was a stupid storyline and I copped a lot of flack over it. I was really upset. My contract didn’t get renewed but I was pretty happy to leave by then. I was ready to go. I was 14 when I joined. It was time to leave.”

Marsh is now living in the UK with fellow Neighbours-ex Ben Nicholas, auditioning for West End roles.

  1. I suspect after the MASSIVE over-investment from UK means they can pull the strings at any point call for a very British ‘Whodunnit’ when they get the itch.

Who shot Harold Bishop could be just months away!!!?

PS. neighbours.com has a new website which has been branded by ch 10 and FremantleMedia, it always seemed independant of the network in past years.

  2. I’m hardly going to name names – I suspect they wouldn’t get through the blog’s moderation, given it would open the publisher up to a lawsuit.

And you CAN say the word “abortion” in a 6:30 timeslot. It’s just that Channel Ten doesn’t want to incur the wrath of the family groups.

  3. You keep going on about the Channel 10 execs, yet you haven’t named anybody.

And the reason why Neighbours storylines are so restrictive (e.g. not using the word “abortion” for instance) is because of the show’s timeslot and rating. But I do think they water down the show WAYYY too much. The violence in this show is a joke. You CAN show someone getting punched out in a G rated show as long as it’s brief, justified by context, and doesn’t dwell on the pain inflicted on the victim.

Tonight’s episode was as bad as the show has ever been over these past few years, so this “revamp” better be worthwhile.

  4. Before everyone rips into the writers, it might be prudent to warn you that much of the storyline direction comes from Channel Ten producers. This is how the Pepper kidnapping storyline came to happen. I know for a fact that the writers were forced into that storyline because Ten execs were chasing ratings – apparently, people like to watch hot blonde girls in jeopardy.

The problem with Channel Ten is that it’s too conservative to do anything ‘risky’ in the 6:30 timeslot. Ever wonder why Skye never mentioned the word ‘abortion’ once during her whole pregnancy will I or won’t I phase? Instead we were treated to lines like, “I don’t know if I’m ready to become a mother.” Heck, even Janae’s HIV scare last year was totally devoid of the utterance of HIV or AIDS.

Channel Ten is trying to emulate the soapy dramatics of Home & Away because they see they’re a ratings winner. But if you try and do these kinds of storylines with even the suggestion of conservativism, they don’t work.

    Hence, Neighbours declining ratings.

What Channel Ten needs to do is back off and let the writers do their jobs. The street needs to go back to the good old days, when drama was created through the relationships between the characters, not ridiculous bomb explosions, car accidents and mentalist scorned mother-in-laws.

Personally, I think one of the stupidest things Channel Ten did was make Neighbours writers scrap the Timmins family. As for why Ned is still there – again, not the writers/producers choice. Look to one particular Channel Ten exec for that decision….

  5. I’m glad that at least Kyal saw the good sense to see how stupid his character had become. I mean, just what kind of person cheats on his spouse mere months after they wed? It’s ridiculous.

And Janae’s BANGIN! Why the hell would he cheat on her with Missy Fat Lips of all people?

I have always critcized the way likeable characters on this show have become excruciating to watch as the writers have frequently turned their characters into total irrational morons just to create a burst of drama. Steph acted like a retard over her cancer scare. Boyd acted like a retard over EVERY relationship that he’s been in throughout the his run on the show. Practically the whole Bishop/Timmins clan became retards after Scott died. Paul became a retard since his tacky amnesia schtick. And they HEAVILY dumbed down Bree’s character over her last few weeks on the show, and Ned being the untalented waste of skin that he is, is suddenly the “nice guy” of the show. I’m not buying it. They kept him on the show 500 episodes too many, and his axing is LONG overdue.

The show was once entertaining, in a campy, soapy kind of way. In it’s current state, there is not a single likeable character left on the show. I’m even disliking Janae more and more as she hangs out with Ned. :/

  6. Nice post Luke, I agree with a lot of what you said.

But how about they bring in a permanent non-white character. How about an Aboriginal person. Surely they exist in Melbourne?

  7. Poor Kyal Marsh and Ben Nicholas too, I think the behavior of the Neighbours writers has been very questionable over the last 6 months.

It’s sad to hear “the change” isn’t going to come quickly as I’m not sure people are going to want to wait.

I used to watch almost every night up till 6-12months ago, now they’d be lucky to get me to sit and watch 1 episode per week, it’s turned to cheap laundry liquid this soap..

Jane Hall joins the cast in the change, she was a train wreak on Rove last week I thought… Seems to me like it had already gone to her head before we even saw anything. She also appeared like she may have had some work done on her face, then again most of us haven’t seen her on screen in like 10 years.

I’m glad Kym Valentine (Libby Kennedy) will return but I hope they don’t have her still dreaming of her dead husband, if so just send her back to the bush… It’s been done.

And Neighbours, are you ever going to put a gay male character in the mix? Not some passing black sheep relative or lipstick lesbian charater.. a gay male, I suggest Ringo Brown (Sam Clark) seeing him at the start of the openning titiles is the only thing that makes me stay to watch!! LOL
