Nine sails to a win

Thanks to the State of Origin and Sea Patrol’s premiere, the Nine Network won Week 27, it’s second ratings win of the year.

In a race that resembled the America’s Cup race, Nine sailed across the finish line with a 29.3% share to Seven’s 28.6%. TEN sank to 20.7%, the ABC had 16.1% and SBS 5.4%.

Nine won Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide, with Seven taking out Melbourne and Perth. Nine also won Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday, with Monday, Tuesday and Friday going to Seven.

Sea Patrol opened spectacularly with almost 2m viewers and was the top show of the week. For Nine it was followed by the State of Origin, 60 Minutes, Nine News, Getaway, Concert for Diana, ACA, and Backyard Blitz. Tuesdays remain an ongoing problem with Nine too frequently falling behind TEN. Nine is tweaking its scheduling with the finales of Crime and Justice, Neighbours at War, removing CSI NY and pushing Molloy’s The Nation back to Wednesdays.

Border Security’s return was Seven’s strongest show, followed by It Takes Two, Seven News, Today Tonight, Grey’s Anatomy, All Saints, Desperate Housewives, Home and Away, How I Met Your Mother and Better Homes and Gardens. Meanwhile The Morning Show continues to thump its rivals. Border Security’s return was lower than season averages but is likely to pick up pace. In fact Seven almost snatched the week from Nine altogether.

TEN had a disappointing week, with Tuesdays its strongest outing, no doubt due to the poor offerings from Nine. NCIS and House were the biggest shows, followed by The Simpsons. Big Brother is lucky to make the magic million. Further down the chain, Torchwood and Pirate Master again shed viewers. America’s Next Top Model had a modest debut. TEN will be rapt to see Thank God You’re Here return this week.

Spicks and Specks was the ABC’s best, then ABC News, 7:30 Report, New Inventor, Chaser repeats and Taggart.

Mondays was tops for SBS.

Ratings Week 27.
