Seven announces Hi Def channel too

Channel Seven has announced that it too will launch a Hi Def channel in December.

The Seven Network today announced its plans for the launch of a new channel on the network’s digital platform.

“We will lead the development of digital broadcast television in Australia,” said CEO David Leckie.

“We are very excited about this new initiative. We have in place the best content, the best people and the digital technology to develop our first extra channel. Seven has been a long time supporter of multichannelling as a key driver for digital television takeup.”

At this stage there are no further details on branding name or content, suggesting Seven may have been caught on the hop by TEN’s announcement. At least that’s how it looks from the outside…

All eyes now turn to Nine.

Press Release:

The high-definition channel will launch in December 2007.

Announcing the new channel, David Leckie, CEO of Seven Network and Seven Media Group said: “We will lead the development of digital broadcast television in Australia.

“We are very excited about this new initiative. We have in place the best content, the best people and the digital technology to develop our first extra channel. Seven has been a long time supporter of multichannelling as a key driver for digital television takeup.

“Our plan is to build on our leadership position in Australian drama, sport, news and entertainment and establish a broad multiple channel presence to further develop the strength of the free-to-air digital platform over the coming 3 years.”

“This new channel will give the amazing creative team here at Seven another outlet and will also allow Seven to test new and innovative programming concepts.”

Seven’s multichannel is a further element in its strategy to create a vibrant digital platform and follows the announcement of Seven’s partnership with TiVo earlier this year.

The branding and content for Seven’s new multi-channel service on its digital platform will be unveiled in the coming months.

Free-to-air broadcasters have been transmitting digital services since January 2001. Under changes to the Broadcasting Services Act made last year, commercial broadcasters were able to transmit a single HD multichannel from 1 January 2007 and a further SD multichannel from 1 January 2009.

  1. Sorry tech qs aren’t really my thing so I don’t want to misdirect you, and not sure I entirely understand the question. I thought you meant your signal had just dropped out.

If you explain the problem to Seven they should find someone to advise or redirect you, though it isn’t the best time of year. Good luck!

  2. Admittedly I don’t cover much Sport in this blog, but Seven did send out some info on Bathurst last week:

A team of more than 300 will create the biggest television broadcast in Australia.
    Key Highlights:
    – 36 cameras (not included in-car cameras): 31 cameras on-track. 4 cameras in the
    pits. 1 helicopter camera
    – 49 in-car cameras in 10 V8 Supercars
    – 31 in-car cameras in cars competing in other races across the 1000 weekend.
    – 36 kilometres of television production cable, enough to lap the circuit six times.
    – Two flycams – covering the pits and the ride down the Mountain through the Dipper
and Forrests Elbow. 160 kilometres an hour top-speed. 770 metres of flycam
    cabling.
    – Production team of 315.
    – Coverage being broadcast in 130 countries across Australia, New Zealand, India,
Pakistan, throughout South-East Asia, the United States across Europe and North
    Africa.
Matthew White and Neil Crompton will anchor Seven’s coverage. Daniel Gibson, Mark Beretta
and Aaron Noonan will follow the drama in the pits. Noonan will cover for Grant Denyer who is
competing in the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000.

  3. What about the V8’s in HD at Bathurst???…you suck ch7, you have ruined the v8’s, your a joke, your telecast is a joke, thanks for ‘sunrising’ a once great sport…thanks for shoving the Kellys and their sponsor dollars down our throats too…you guys are a joke!!

  4. Why is it always an “anonymous” person who has a dummy spit or a degrading comment about things??? (Probably because they work for an opposing network!)
Channel 7 has by FAR the best selection of shows on Aus TV at the moment and are the only one that could justify the extra HD channel. I watch Channel 9 twice a week (McLeods and Sea Patrol) and 10 rarely … I watch 7 every night/day. They should rescue Torchwood from 10 as it is also breathtaking in HD!
    Jack!
