Californication lands ACMA investigation

The Australian Communications and Media Authority will investigate Network TEN’s Californication following complaints from lobby groups.

ACMA confirmed it would launch an investigation to Christian group, the Festival of Light.

“This is a show on cable in the US and not free-to-air like here in Australia,” Festival of Light spokeswoman Roslyn Phillips told AAP.

“There is still a long way to go. We made our complaint in writing, and Channel TEN responded to the complaint, but ACMA will launch an investigation.

“We are happy with this move but not happy with the show,” she said. “We don’t like the way the Catholic Church is treated, it’s beyond the pale.”

Network TEN defends that the show complies with appropriate broadcasting classification rulings for its timeslot, and attracts an audience of around 900,000 each week.

However freedom of speech is a wonderful thing. While the show is racy and lascivious, it is likely ACMA will be particularly interested in whether the programme is discriminatory towards sectors of the community, including the Christian religion.

  1. Good point about Sex and the City. I’ve seen nothing, NOTHING in Californication that has surpassed the MA15+ rating. Hell, I don’t even think it comes close to an R18+ rating as the language is relatively infrequent (although one episode contained occassional use of the C word), and the sex scenes have practically disappeared since the pilot.

  2. Frankly the most offensive aspect of Californication is as Hank Moody has asked, “Why is the city of angels so hell-bent on destroying its female population?”

The family groups should be complaining that Hank’s apathy to life, his singular inability for self-love and in particular watching his family slip through his fingers, is far more offensive than a few pink bits and a few swear words in a 9:30 timeslot that is classified accordingly.

  3. The first comment is right on target. There is nothing as offensive on Calafornication as the crap on TT and ACA. These idiots should just concentrate on rigging talent searches. Different sect I know but really what’s the difference?

  4. I wonder if these twits get upset when gay or black people are treated unfairly! Frankly the more the catholic church is shown in a poor light the closer we are to reality. It’s nothing but a symbol for hatred bigotry and hypocricy.

  5. Now if only these lobbyists got on TT/ACA’s case for their constant racial discrimination instead of wasting their words on non-issues like this.

Speaking of hypocrisy, I wonder if their demented honking will continue when Tell Me You Love Me airs in Australia.

  6. dont worry about global warming, terrorism or conservation!!! Lets jsut worry about getting Californication off the air!!
Nothing will come of the investigation, they are doing it to shut those whingers up.
    Californication rocks!

p.s. To all those dogooders..Get a life you loosers.

  7. Oh for god’s (lower case intentional) sake!

These Festival Of Light nimrods really, really need to turn off the TV and get back to obsessing over whatever myth they believe is their version of reality.

Religious people of all types, it’s REALLY easy, even if you can’t see past the delusion you’ve been sucked into:

IF YOU DON’T LIKE IT, TURN IT OFF.

Not hard. I myself turned Benny Hinn off in sheer revolted disgust last night. That guy’s scamming people under the guise of religion, but do *I* complain to ACMA? No, not so far. But perhaps it’s time I did.

“Californication”, by the way, is in NO way discriminatory about religion. Get over it, delusional ones. I’m sure I’ll do just fine in hell, where all the fun people who aren’t you are.

  8. SHE said…. amazing a bunch of chicks are complaining..

We had to endure Sex in The City for how long???
And now the role is reversed its not fair hey…
