Darren Hayes teams with Idols

Darren Hayes will appear on an Australian Idol special “Doing It For The Kids.”

The special will feature the Idol finalists and former stars in a 2 hr special to raise money for childrens’ charities.

Damien Leith and the Young Divas will also appear.

The special airs 7:30pm Friday October 19 directly before John Foreman Presents: Burt Bacharach.

Hayes was recently cleared of an investigation involving a racial slur against a Thai waiter in a London restaurant. Police found there was no case to answer. He will be in the middle of his ‘Time Machine’ Tour around Australia when the special airs.

  1. To the first person who commented: So because these people are Christian evangelicals, they’re automatically going to have a problem singing with a gay man? I’m a Christian, and I would have no problem singing with Darren. I admire him for his singing ability and his gift for writing powerful lyrics, and I also admire him for doing this for the children.

It’s a shame you have such a narrow-minded, not to mention incredibly ignorant, view of Christians.

  2. To anonymous who commented on the christian evangelicals singing with a married gay man, if they are true christians, I would hope it won’t matter a bit. Besides it’s about the music and the talent, not sexuality. Darren’s a real talent, someone these guys should learn alot from.

  3. David, if my memory serves me correctly, the Hillsong-as-ARIA-chart-store farce was put to an end last year by ARIA after many, many (completely justified) complaints.

  4. I agree with you David re: the Hillsong “advantage”. It’s no different to having a town, state, school, workplace etc. voting for you. Anyway – by having so many allegedly Hillsong-affiliated entrants, wouldn’t they be spreading their votes a little thin?

  5. But TT also claimed Mark de Costa was part of the Christian flock. It didn’t save him this week.

There have been previous pushes from lobby groups, or country towns, for certain contestants before. One had a big (if unofficial) push from Telstra as I recall due to a family member high up the chain too. So I’m not sure how this differs.

Proud Christian Dean Geyer also didn’t make it to the end, so the theory isn’t watertight.

Hillsong as a legitimate ARIA sales outlet is a way bigger issue for me.

  6. Idol is rigged.

I’m not one to believe too much what Today Tonight passes off as journalism, but its story seems to have some merit. Hillsong Church apparently tells its followers to vote for their fellow church-goers in Idol (there are 5 left in the competition) and resulted in the win of Guy Sebastian during the first series.

That’s an unfair advantage isn’t it?
