A very ogre Christmas

Nine will premiere Shrek The Halls, a half-hour animation with the voices of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz and Antonio Banderas.

It will air at 6:30pm on Saturday December 1, running head to head against Seven’s High School Musical 2. It is followed by the grand final of Australia’s Funniest Home Videos at 7pm.

Shrek Art Director Peter Zaslav promises the Christmas special will introduce a couple of new characters adding, “It will primarily consist of old ones that audiences are already familiar with. We’re visiting some old environments and all the core group of characters. It really integrates with what’s taking place where Shrek the Third left off.”

Press Release:

Channel Nine will present SHREK THE HALLS, an instant family classic featuring the voices of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz and Antonio Banderas, on Saturday, December 1 at 6.30pm.

SHREK THE HALLS is a half-hour of Christmas entertainment starring the world’s favourite ogre and his friends, from DreamWorks Animation, producers of the Shrek movie series.

Just when Shrek thought he could finally sit back, relax and enjoy living happily ever after with his new family, the most joyous of all holidays arrives. It’s Christmas Eve and everyone is full of holiday cheer – except Shrek. He isn’t exactly the picture of yuletide joy but, for the sake of Fiona and the kids, he tries to get into the spirit of things as only an ogre can.

Unfortunately everyone seems to have their own ideas as to what Christmas is all about, so when Donkey, Puss in Boots, Gingerbread Man and the whole gang try to join in on the fun, Shrek’s plans for a cosy family celebration end up spiralling into one truly unforgettable Christmas.

The Shrek series is DreamWorks Animation’s most successful franchise to date. It began with the groundbreaking, Academy Award-winning feature Shrek, based on the popular children’s book by William Steig. The sequel, Shrek 2, proved even more successful at the box office, almost doubling the worldwide take of the original to become the third-highest-grossing film of all time.

Shrek the Third, the latest instalment, recently rewrote box office history by scoring the biggest US opening weekend ever for an animated film, and has grossed nearly $800 million to date. The fourth film in the series is already in production.

SHREK THE HALLS is a half-hour special that the producers plan on becoming a Christmas TV classic, to go to air every year in the holiday season. Says art director Peter Zaslav: “While there will be a couple of new characters, it will primarily consist of old ones that audiences are already familiar with. We’re visiting some old environments and all the core group of characters. It really integrates with what’s taking place where Shrek the Third left off.”

SHREK THE HALLS will premiere Saturday, December 1 at 6.30pm on Channel Nine.

  1. Why would they put this up against High School Musical 2? It’s going to be murdered!!! Never go up against the Musical, it’s an unstoppable jugganaut….

Oh well, with it being the last day of ratings I think this battle with represent much of this year’s ratings war- Seven whopping Nine’s butt!

Will be very interested to see how this one plays out… David- I hope you tell us the winner!

  2. I think it is EXTREMELY foolish of Nine to air this on the night of the High School Musical 2 premiere. I can imagine that children all over the country will find it hard to choose between the two premieres. I think it would have been wiser for Nine to air the Shrek special during a 30-minute timeslot on a weeknight (if they even have any anymore).

  3. David, you mentioned a while beack that Survivor China will be airing on the 1st of December, Is this still happening or will it air the following week?
