Changes to TEN digital

TEN is making some changes to its digital allocation as it readies for the launch of TEN HD in December.

TEN’s new channel configuration:
Channel 1 = Ten in HD
Channel 10 = Ten in SD
Channel 12 = Ten in HD

As a result, channels 11 and 100 will disappear from TEN’s service on Tuesday 20th November. There is no change to analogue, TEN’s main channel.

Meanwhile questions continue over what some observers have described as misinformation in TEN’s HD ads. In the advertisement, TEN says HD TV is “easy to get” by either purchasing a new TV “that’s HD ready or buy an HD set box and attach it to your TV at home.”

But as one reader notes, “a HDTV has a 1280×720 pixels minimum, whereas a standard TV has only 480lines of resolution.

To receive HDTV you need BOTH a HDTV, and a HDTV signal.

A HDTV with a digital tuner will be fine. Or a HDTV with a HD set top box will also be fine.

But a HD set top box and a standard TV (like they say) will NOT bring you HD images, as a standard TV can not display a HD signal. It will simply be a standard (SD) signal.”

Press Release:
Next week, TEN’S digital channel allocation will change ahead of the launch of TEN-HD in December.

The changes are:

· Channel 1 will change from TEN’s Standard Definition (SD) signal to its High Definition (HD) signal.

Digital viewers can continue to watch TEN on Channel 10 on a standard definition receiver. This will occur on Tuesday 20th November.

· TEN will commence broadcasting its Electronic Program Guide (EPG) along with Channels 1, 10 and 12 on Monday 19th November.

EPG information will be available on a rolling eight day basis.

· The Video Program Guide will cease on Channels 11 and 100 because program information will now be carried in the EPG accompanying Channels 1, 10 and 12.

As a result, channels 11 and 100 will disappear from TEN’s service on Tuesday 20th November. Viewers may have to re-scan their set-top-box to remove those channels from their service list.

TEN’s new channel configuration:
Channel 1 = Ten in HD
Channel 10 = Ten in SD
Channel 12 = Ten in HD

Note: There will be no change to TEN’s analogue service

  1. “Of course TEN HD will have ads. How do you think they managed to be able to fund this?”

The last time I watched HDTV (a few months ago), Southern Cross HD didn’t have ads, just those boring “look how pretty HD is” demonstrations instead of adbreaks. They were so boring I actually missed the ads…

I’ve been told Melbourne’s Ten HD has ads though.

  2. I’m quite looking forward to TEN HD. Will this channel air HD content ONLY, or will they still air some of their SD content? (e.g. The Simpsons, Next Top Model etc.)

  3. what sort of stuff would you expect to see on 10 HD? Shows 10 have aired on the SD channel previously but have not done too well like the US Office, the 4400 and Battlestar Galactica?
