Idol finale dogged by technical disasters

Network TEN’s Australian Idol finale didn’t get off to a good start.

Screening live from the Sydney Opera House, a string of technical problems unhitched TEN’s big night from the get go.

Screens went dead at the start of the broadcast.

Microphones played havoc with sound dropping in and out.

The ten year reunion of iconic band The Divinyls was cut short went TEN’s signal went dead. TEN cut to a commercial break.

When they returned all they showed was the audience standing around and a distant voice for about ten seconds. They cut back to more commercials.

Finally, Andrew G acknowledged the technical hitches and re-introduced the Divinyls who started their song all over again.

Later when he chatted to the outrageous Chrissie Amphlett, Andrew G asked about the new look in Divinyls latest single.

“We had fluffers do it!” beamed Amphlett.

But TEN redeemed itself with a spectacular “All Night Long” number by the Top 12 complete with fireworks over Sydney and a surprise appearance by Lionel Richie. It was an excellent mix of emotion and spectacle. When Richie walked on stage it was just the boost the night needed.

  1. oh bad was tens coverage.. my housemate and i were just shocked..

and chrissie.. omg was she on grugs.. if thats just her i cant believe ten let andrew g talk to her..

especially after making her perform the song twice just for a tv audience.. wat about the poor crowd lol..

ten u only deserved 1.4million for such a lame arse coverage! life ur socks up for next!

  2. it only finished on time because they set the finishing time 1/2 an hour later than previous years….i think.

i just laughed at the coverage everytime there was a technical glitch…..

  3. I was busy watching Da Kath & Kim Code (0% interest in the AI finale apart from finding out who won), but in between ad breaks I noticed the technical glitches (namely the one of the audience hanging around outside the opera house, only to black out and cut to a commercial break).

What’s done is done. No doubt it rated its socks off though. Oh, and I saw a promo for Ten HD (which premieres on Dec 16), but there was no sound. 😐

At least for once, it *sort of* finished on time though.

  4. Looks like they have cut out/resolved those issues for the WA coverage, we are still at the bit where the Divinyls performed, but there were no hitches.

  5. OK….so, what’s the go now?…Another ten minutes of zilcho on the telly where the idol coverage should be !!! My goodness, someone is really going to be unpopular tomorrow!!!
