Idols: ‘We never said song was a dud’

What’s that sound? Could it be the reversing beeps from Idol camp today, with Matt Corby and Natalie Gauci both ‘clarifying’ their position over what they said about the ‘Idol single’ “Here I Am”?

“We never said it was a dud,” Corby has since told AAP. True they never used that word, but still…..

“It’s a great pop song and for what it is I think people will really enjoy it. It’s got a sweet melody.”

Really? Last night he looked bored singing it. Gauci also found something nice to say.

“I think when it comes to the Winner’s Journey you have to think of that as part of it and not as something you’d release on your album,” she said. “I think that we both feel that it is an Idol song but we never said it was bad. It’s a massive ballad, it’s typically Idol, people will buy it, and honestly I think if I heard it I would buy it.”

I honestly think if I heard it I would remember the original comments several newspapers attributed to them. And then I’d turn off my radio. Gauci and Corby are both good singers, but this song does them no favours.

But such is the lot of Idol, where kids with limited media experience (although Gauci has a lot as a performer) are thrown to the wolves. This smacks of Sony BMG pulling their new products into line. There’s a lot of moolah at stake here.

Welcome to reality, kids.

  1. Matt is such a chicken. Instead of, on national television, sticking it to the fat cats backstage at a format badly in need of a refresh, he backed off. He would have immediately garnered all the votes of those who agreed with him.

    Damn!
