Seven signs Aust Open to 2014

The Seven Network has signed The Australian Open through to 2014.

Seven has also secured exclusive new media rights for 2008-2014 and exclusive subscription television rights for 2010-2014.

But high definition broadcasting won’t kick in until 2009.

“Seven Network provides an outstanding coverage of the Australian Open and is an integral part of its success. The fact that we have extended our partnership another five years is an enormous positive for our organisation and our sport,” said Tennis Australia CEO Steve Wood.

Press Release:

The Seven Network and Tennis Australia today signed a new long-term agreement for television coverage of The Australian Open.

The new agreement dramatically expands Seven’s long-term partnership with Tennis Australia – extending Seven’s current agreement beyond broadcast television.

Under the new multi-level agreement, Seven has secured rights encompassing broadcast television, new media and subscription television for the Open until 2014.

Seven has extended its current broadcast free-to-air television agreement for coverage from 2009 until 2014. Seven has also secured exclusive new media rights for 2008-2014 and exclusive subscription television rights for 2010-2014. Seven will launch high-definition television coverage of the Open from 2009 and will continue to produce the global television coverage of the event.

Seven has been the television partner of The Australian Open since 1973. The new agreement also delivers Seven all rights for the Davis Cup and the tournaments which form Australia’s Summer of Tennis.

“Tennis Australia is thrilled to continue one of the most successful partnerships in Australian sports broadcasting,’’ Tennis Australia CEO Steve Wood said. “Seven Network provides an outstanding coverage of the Australian Open and is an integral part of its success. The fact that we have extended our partnership another five years is an enormous positive for our organisation and our sport.’’

Commenting, the Chief Executive Officer of the Seven Network and Seven Media Group, Mr David Leckie, said: “The Open is one of the great sports events. It makes great television and provides a tremendous launch platform for our television year.

“Under our new agreement with Tennis Australia, the Open will play a key role in our company as we expand our commitment to the event and leverage our coverage across an array of content delivery mechanisms: broadcast television, subscription television, online and other new media platforms. We are looking forward to working with Tennis Australia to further build on tennis’ deep connection with all Australians and the continuing and increasing success of the Open.”

  1. Just what we need, C7’s jingoistic coverage and Sandy Roberts exhaulting during play.

A more restrained coverage would highlight Australia in a more positive note.
