ABC shoots arrow at ratings target

The ABC’s schedule for the the first week of 2008 Ratings is in.

It will feature the second series of Robin Hood (premiering Feb 3), new series of Dalziel and Pascoe, Agatha Christie telemovies, Life on Mars, plus UK comedy That Mitchell and Webb Look (also coming to UKTV in Feb), documentaries Apollo 11: The Untold Story and Soul Deep: The Story Of Black Popular Music.

As previously reported The Bill is no longer screening on Tuesday nights, replaced by documentaries, beginning with a second series of Brat Camp. Foreign Correspondent is trimmed by ten minutes to begin at 9:30pm. The ABC’s scheduling of docos at 8:30pm Tuesdays pits them directly against SBS documentaries. Double eps of The Bill continue on Saturday nights.

The ABC of course does not subscribe to theory of ratings seasons, and indeed the first week will see other shows end, including the 2-part Little Britain Abroad specials. Will it subsequently launch the new series of Double the Fist in the traditional Chaser timeslot?

There are also new series of Spicks and Specks, Catalyst, The Einstein Factor, The Cook and the Chef, Talking Heads, Compass, Australian Story, At the Movies, New Inventors, Grand Designs, Gardening Australia, Can We Help? and Collectors. Doc Martin is a repeat.

There is a TBA slot at 8:30pm Mondays, traditionally the home of Four Corners and Media Watch, the latter has a new producer and presenter in 2008.

ABC has also flagged a presentation change, likely to see the rebranding of the channel as ABC1.

  3. Look at how many of those shows are already released on DVD.

    You should get an Amazon affiliation and link to shows like life on mars which is was released on DVD some time ago.

    How about the ABC tries fast tracking some shows.

    At this rate, they will be showing us ‘new’ episodes of The Two Ronnies next 🙂

  4. Its a little disappointing that the ABC has scheduled their documentaries at the sametime as SBS.

    It kind of makes you wonder if the ABC is trying to steal viewers from SBS. If they weren’t that interested in ratings, they would be running them on another night so the viewer (remember us!!!) would have more choice and not have to miss one for the other.
