Press Release:

The Chopping Block – the latest offering from reality TV hit-makers David Barbour and Julian Cress of The Block, Celebrity Overhaul, Celebrity Circus and Overhaul fame – premieres on Nine on Wednesday, February 6 at 7.30pm.

The new series is literally a food fight for survival. Set in the ultra-competitive restaurant world of Sydney and Melbourne, it pits restaurants against each other to impress a food critic and win a dishy cash prize of $20,000.

The Chopping Block is hosted by Getaway’s Catriona Rowntree with top chef and restaurateur Matt Moran. Each week two different restaurants receive a review by a top-secret critic. Then, with a budget of $5000 and assistance from Moran, they will close their doors for 48 hours to overhaul everything from their menus and service to décor in an effort to win over the food critic and pocket the cash.

As their business is scrutinised, how will management and staff handle the pressure of opening night? Not to mention the brutally honest comments of the mystery food critic who’ll be there sitting at a table like the other diners, penning the final make-or-break restaurant review.

The cameras will capture all the behind-the-scenes drama as it unfolds week by week when one single mistake could be the undoing of a restaurant struggling to stay in business against cut-throat competition

First up on The Chopping Block are two cafés in the Sydney southern beachside suburb of Cronulla: Café Parlo and Café 43, two of almost 50 restaurants in the area. Husband and wife team Dino and Antoinette Mansillo run Café 43, while father and son team Chris and Michael Parlas operate Café Parlo.

Café Parlo’s big problem is in the kitchen, with head chef Dominic and second chef Zena’s relationship anything but amicable. These two make for a fiery combination before they even start cooking. With the help of Matt Moran, will Dominic and Zena be able to pull it all together in time for the critic’s final review?

Over at Café 43, cocky Dino thinks that his restaurant can easily win this competition, saying: “I won this before we even started to put paint on the walls.” Will the food critic agree?

For these two cafés, winning The Chopping Block really could mean the difference between keeping the doors open or going down the tubes. This truly is a food fight for survival.

The Chopping Block is produced by Granada Productions and will premiere on Wednesday, February 6 at 7.30pm on the Nine Network.
