Heath Ledger film tribute to air

Responding to today’s tragic news of the passing of Heath Ledger, Movie One will pay tribute to his life by screening a selection of his films.

At 8:30pm tonight it will screen Casanova plus Ten Things I Hate About You at 10:20pm. On Saturday it will air four Ledger movies, back to back: Ten Things I Hate About You, Brothers Grimm, Brokeback Mountain and Casanova.

Meanwhile tributes are flowing for the young actor from the film industry.

Margaret Pomeranz from At The Movies said, “I am so upset, I just can’t tell you,” she told ABC Radio.

“I mean he is such a talented boy and really, I think a beautiful soul. And I think to choose the roles he chose shows such intelligence.”

Meanwhile, representatives of the actor’s family said police had advised them his death was accidental, the TMZ.com website reported.

The site said representatives had made contact to say Ledger’s family was particularly distraught over media speculation that he may have taken his own life. He was not that kind of person, the family said.

Other tributes included:
Kevin Rudd. “It was with great sadness that I have learned of the passing of Heath Ledger,” he said. “It is tragic that we have lost one of our nation’s finest actors in the prime of his life. Heath Ledger’s diverse and challenging roles will be remembered as some of the great performances by an Australian actor.”

Mel Gibson: “I had such great hope for him,” Gibson told the Entertainment Tonight website. He was just taking off and to lose his life at such a young age is a tragic loss. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.”

Aden Young: “I think really if you take into account the quality of his work it’s a real tragedy that we’ve lost the opportunity to see more of it in the future. It’s an extraordinary tragedy for his daughter and for his family, it’s a real shock. It’s just a terrible loss.”

Guy Pearce: “Heath, I heard nothing but delightful praise for you, and so even though I never knew you today is a very sad day,” Pearce said in a joint statement with his wife, Kate. “Your dignity, humility, grace and talent will always be an inspiration to me. You shook the world and made us take notice. My heart goes out to you, your friends and your family, especially little Matilda Rose. May your spirit live on to affect all those who hear about you and see your great work.”

Nicole Kidman: ”What a terrible tragedy,” Kidman said through her publicist Wendy Day. ”My heart goes out to Heath’s family.”

8.40pm – BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN – Starring Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal and Michelle Williams
10.55pm – CASANOVA – Starring Heath Ledger and Sienna Miller
A memorial introduction will be presented at the commencement of each movie.

  2. No, none of the Film channels on Foxtel have ads during the film screening, only in between each film(world movies doesn’t have commercials as such just promos for other films, unlike showtime and movie network who have advertisers such as Toyota and Stella Atois).

  3. I doubt they’re doing it to cash-in as Movie One doesn’t play ads (last time I checked anyway). I’m sure the Foxtel subscription fees already cover it.

    Besides, I think it’s in the general public interest for Movie One to air Heath’s most prominent movies as a way to pay tribute to him.

  4. I have to say it: is this a heart-felt “tribute” or a cheap way for the network to cash-in on his death?

    I’d hate to think it was the latter.

    Then again, even broadcast networks do the same once someone dies.

  5. Hey David, just thought I’d point out that you listed the Movie One schedule as “February 23”.

    On topic though, I was shocked when I learned of his death. Such a waste of such a promising young actor. RIP Heath.

  6. The first movie I saw Heath in was The Patriot – and I was fascinated by his performance. He was a standout and I couldn’t believe he was a local Perth boy. I feel sad that media today focus on the person and their private life rather than the great work they do. Would have been wonderful to watch his career further blossom. Thanks for making this site a respectful environment for the industry.
