Nine dumps Carey

Former AFL star Wayne Carey has been sacked by the Nine Network.

GTV9 managing director Jeffrey Browne said the network would not be renewing its contract with Carey.

“That contract expired at the end of last season and while negotiations had commenced for a new contract, Nine had now terminated those negotiations,” he said.

Three days after the 36-year-old was arrested during a domestic dispute, it was revealed that Carey is also facing felony charges in Florida over an incident last October.

Carey’s girlfriend Kate Neilson told police in Miami that the former football great turned commentator had smashed a wine glass on her face, cutting her mouth and neck.

He is due to face the Miami-Dade County Court on February 15.

Nine Network managing director Jeffrey Browne on Wednesday released a statement saying the network would not be renewing its contract with Carey.

Carey has been a guest commentator on Nine Network programs, The Footy Show (AFL) and Footy Classified, and a match commentator for Fox Sports and Melbourne radio station 3AW.

On Tuesday 3AW general manager Graham Mott announced Carey was no longer under contract with Fairfax Radio.

  1. dont worry Neon Kitten, the people in said power will award him with the hall of fame and or/greatest contributer to a sport etc etc…
So no matter what happens, and no matter what we think, he is a hero in the eyes of the people with “medium” amounts of cash 🙂

  2. David, yes, that’s a given. Though he HAS been charged in the US. Charged. *not* convicted. People, remember how our justice system works. Same for Carey as for you and me, strangely enough.

And yet-another-“anonymous”… how amusing you assume that I’m a girl. Maybe I am, maybe I’m not. Doesn’t matter what sex I am, I dislike men that beat up on women. I also happen to dislike men that beat up on men, women that beat up on women, and women that beat up on men. Basically, beat up on anyone, you’re a sad pathetic waste of time. Period.

But that’s not the point. When you’re basing your judgement on *anyone* based solely on information provided to you by a media that’s in it entirely for the money, you’re a bloody idiot.

  3. NK, everyone knows what the guys like, the wheels of justice move slow in this here town. And considering how the courts treat upper profile people, he will probably get a fine for beating up his girlfriend (and the police :P) and thats even if they decide to charge him.
I think they should make an example of him to show the up and comers that you cant be this way and get away with it just because you can kick a footy.

  4. How about everyone waits until he’s actually *convicted* before jumping in about “what he deserves”. Or is a fair hearing in court no longer part of the justice process?

And yes, I’m looking at YOU, Nine and 3AW.

I’m no fan of Carey (or of football in general), but this disturbing trend of sack-em-cos-they’re-presumed-guilty is a real worry.

  5. wow, a footballer misbehaved.

I, for one, am shocked and appauled and…well actually it’s not a surprise. Alot of football players are juvenile, pathetic little people.

Carey is a bad human being, look at his past. He gets what he deserves, how about a few days in gaol for attacking his girlfriend (she should get rid of him, but won’t, silly WAG)
