Be afraid. Shaun Micallef is coming back.
Newstopia returns for a second season from 10pm Wednesday February 27.
“I want people to watch Newstopia and then go to the window, open it, stick their head out and yell: ‘I’m as complacent as the next person – and I’m going to tolerate this indefinitely!’” joked Micallef.
Guest cast members returning for the 10 episode second series will be Kat Stewart, Nicholas Bell, Ben Anderson, Julie Eckersley and Peter Houghton.
Press Release:
Shaun Micallef is returning to SBS Television for a second series of Newstopia from Wednesday February 27 at 10pm.
Newstopia is the half hour news program with one eye on Australia and the other on itself, watching the rest of the world. Anchored by Shaun Micallef, Australia’s premier high-brow comedian and slapstick intellectual, the first series premiered last October.
Said Micallef of the show’s return: “I want people to watch Newstopia and then go the window, open it, stick their head out and yell: ‘I’m as complacent as the next person – and I’m going to tolerate this indefinitely!’”
In Newstopia, Micallef delivers the news with a mostly straight face – tempered with the odd raised eyebrow and a rolled eyeball. He crosses to journalists in Australia and overseas, as well as hosting studio debates and discussions that invariably go awry. Ad breaks in Newstopia are peppered with cultish on-air promos for non-existent programs (such as Inspektor Herring and Tyrants and Their Pets).
Guest cast members returning for the 10 episode second series will be Kat Stewart, Nicholas Bell, Ben Anderson, Julie Eckersley and Peter Houghton.
Newstopia. It’s (still) the news. We think.
Newstopia is a Crackerjack production for SBS Independent.

One of the worst shows in living history. Micallef thinks he is John Stewart. He is not!
Shaun Micarleff carn’t spel.
Very, very, very glad it’s back without a long hiatus.
I still don’t like the timeslot, but it’s certainly better than no timeslot at all!
Already knew about it but the presence of a press-release is always good!
My window is open and ready.
Awesome… looking forward to it.
I thought this was already announced. Oh well.
I’m really glad it’s back though. It’s so silly and absurd, yet it manages to be intelligent (when they want to be). 🙂
I forgot all about this show!
