Awards clash on Foxtel

Foxtel prides itself on being the home of awards and with the Emmys, MTV, AVMAs, Golden Globes, SAGs, Tonys, American Music Awards and Helpmanns it’s a fair call.

It’s even better when many of them air live to air. We get to see big name celebrities give acceptance speeches and songs or deliver the occasional blunder, simultaneously with international audiences.

But next Monday there is a clash that ought to have been avoided.

The 50th Grammy Awards will air live on FOX8 at 12pm. It is preceded by lots of Red Carpet action (from Joey Fatone no less!) from 8am.

On the other side of the Atlantic the BAFTA is holding its 61st British Academy Film Awards. Being a Sunday night in the UK it will begin at 9am AEST Monday morning. But it is delayed in Australia, screening at, you guessed it 12pm on Arena. Smack back in contention with the Grammys.

Stupid programming or an embarrasment of riches?

  1. I just hope that when they get to the Academy Awards that Foxtel is fair to all of its subscribers by broadcasting on a more general channel than Showcase. I missed the SAG Awards and I was not impressed!

  2. David, thankfully both FOX8 and Arena have timeshifted channels. So one could always watch one of the ceremonies live and switch over to the another channel’s timeshifted broadcast 2 hours later.
