Canal Road set for international market

Aussie drama Canal Road, set to premiere on the Nine Network later this year, has been picked up by UK distributor Portman Film & TV.

The 13 part medical-legal drama stars Paul Leydon (As The World Turns, LAX, Ghost Whisperer and Law & Order: SVU) and Brooke Satchwell, Grant Bowler, Diana Glenn, Sibylla Budd and Charlie Clausen.

It centres on the live of those who work at and attend a medical-legal centre in the heart of Melbourne, gradually revealing an intricate web of corruption stretching to the upper echelons of Australian business and politics.

Portman has also picked up the ABC telemovie Blood in the Sand, a true crime story set in rural Australia in 1928. An English-born crime novelist plots the perfect murder for his first novel but a friend to whom he reveals the details decides to put fiction into practice.

“We are delighted to have acquired the rights to distribute these shows internationally,” said Chris Bartlett, head of Portman’s television sales division.

Portman will take the new titles to MipTV in April.

Portman has previously acted as international distributors for Underbelly and Sea Patrol.
