Fox wants Hole in the Wall

The US Fox Network will follow the Australian move to produce a local production of the Japanese gameshow Hole in the Wall.
It has ordered a pilot of the show which puts players, dressed in spandex and hard hats, face down a moving barrier that features ever-changing cut-out shapes. They have to contort their bodies every which way in order to fit through the wall or else end up being swept into a pool of water.
Nine will produce a local version in 2008.
FremantleMedia has eight international versions of the format in production including Russia and India.
FremantleMedia North America chief executive Cecile Frot-Coutaz said the format “has a universal comedic appeal with viewers of all ages across multiple platforms,” noting clips of Hole have attracted more than 5 million hits on YouTube over the past six to nine months.

I don’t know if this show will translate well. I love it, but it’s more suited to that bizarre Japanese humour that most people who don’t watch subtitled anime won’t get. Oh yeah, it’s funny for the first episode or two, but I don’t see it lasting much longer than that..
It’s just a shame that Nine are acting like this is some new game show when Big Brother Friday Night Live has already used it in their weekly challenges. It’d get very boring after 10 minutes of people trying to fit through strange shaped holes in foam.
Possibly the greatest TV show idea known to man. I don’t know how well it will do in English language versions, though. There is just something inherently fun in the Japanese versions of shows like this that can be hard to repeat.
