From Blue Heelers to Oscar

Now the spoiling is over, congratulations to Aussie documentary maker Eva Orner for her win with the film, Taxi to the Dark Side.

Orner is a former production manager for Blue Heelers, and producer of Aussie indie flicks Strange Fits of Passion and Josh Jarman.

She headed to New York in 2004 and spent three months “pounding on doors” looking for work until Gibney, one of America’s leading documentary makers, gave her a job.

Orner and Gibney could be at next year’s Oscars as their new documentary, Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr Hunter S. Thompson, impressed at last month’s Sundance Film Festival.

The Australian also has a slate of other films she hopes to produce and with the Oscar win, they are now a great chance to be made.

“It’s an exciting time,” she said.

“People are certainly taking my calls.”

An Oscar nomination and win also, apparently, carries a bit of cache on the dating scene, according to the unattached Orner.

“It’s quite funny because I’ve had lots of calls from eligible men since I got nominated,” Orner said.

“I was saying to my brother the other day my stock has definitely gone up.”
