Gretel tipped to host Weakest Link revival

Channel Seven is said to be reviving The Weakest Link -and Gretel Killeen will be hosting.

The spiteful game show was still considered a success when it was “shelved indefinitely” in April 2002. It was hosted by Cornelia Frances, now a regular on Home and Away. Frances was perfect for the “school marm” role, but Killeen’s persona isn’t so far removed either.

“As far as I’m aware the show is coming back and Gretel is doing it,” one TV source told news.com.au

“She’s the perfect fit for a role like this, the show went out a hit and with Gretel on board, will return a hit,” a senior production company source said.

But Killeen’s management agency Creative Rep wouldn’t confirm the link in the Killeen-Channel 7 chain when quizzed yesterday.

“As far as I know Gretel is having time out at the moment, when there is something to announce we will do so,” the spokeswoman said.

The only problem for Weakest Link is the premise itself. Audiences have traditionally only flocked to shows that thrive on spite in short bursts. None of television’s long-running quiz or game shows are underlined with animosity.

  1. She keeps on keeping on, like it or not! Emphasise on the not. It all makes sense.
She makes her comeback on the Logies, then she releases her Autobiography July 09, then she she does the Weakest Link. Thats Showbiz!

  2. I’d like to see Seven pay out the people that they still owe money to for the old episodes of the Weakest Link before they start handing out more to new contestants!!!

  3. Responding to “the human dree” …
Well, if I was as fabulous as Gretel, I would probably be a bit of a bitch too … hang on … I AM as Fab as Gretel … and i AM a bitch! 🙂
    Jack!

  4. Gretel is nasty on TV and nasty in person. She’s extremely sexist and is constantly telling people what she thinks of them, this is a good part of the reason why she lost her job at BB.
The thing about Cornelia is that she was being a bitch, but you knew she was just playing the part. The thing about Gretel is she will play the bitch, and she wont be pretending at all.
This show wont last long at all.

  5. And people say Channel 9 is in the past… give me break! that makes two programs in 2008 Gladiators and now The Weakest Link.
Why would Channel Seven want to revisit the 90’s??
In the 90’s 7 was always 2nd… If they keep this up they will again soon!

  6. Cornelia Frances is just fabulous – one of Australia’s leading actors. She plays bitchy characters very well, I love her work on Young Doctors, Sons & Daughters & of course Home & Away!
I used to LOVE The Weakest Link, I hope they bring it back!

  7. I am not sure about this. Will Gretel do a far better job as Cornelia Frances did in the past, or will she lack the talent? If Seven hires Gretel, I hope that they won’t make a mistake. Alternatively, Seven could pull a NBC and make Anne Robinson host the show instead.

Also, I believe that it was shelved indefinitely due to poor ratings in Australia, even though it fired several weeks after it first started. How do we know that this won’t be repeated.

  8. your right it never really ended here, sure it stopped being “big”, but it was still on 5 days a week, early evening, and occasional episodes on Saturday evening BBC 1.

and yes it has now moved from BBC 2 to BBC 1 in place of Neighbours.

hopefully this wont last long, and Out of the Blue will move it back to BBC 2, when it starts.

  9. I’d love to see Gretel do TWL, but i agree with you regarding the longevity (or lack thereof) of the format, the novelty wore off pretty quickly last time around. But oddly enough those Brits are still watching The Weakest Link after 8 years and it’s now being promoted to BBC1 to replace Neighbours there
