Nine lodges appeal papers

The Nine Network ran out of time to have its banned gangland drama Underbelly screened in Victoria tonight after failing to lodge an appeal by 3.40pm (AEDT) today.

But by late afternoon it did lodge papers which will initiate a subsequent hearing, to be heard by three judges in the Court of Appeal.

The Age claims the next step is for the court’s registry to list a directions hearing for the matter. It believes that the registry will list the hearing if urgent and appropriate but these critieria have yet to have been made out. It is expected that Nine will lodge an affidavit tomorrow to support those critieria.

The appeal is expected to be heard on Friday.

Meanwhile, the drama is likely to be available for illegal downloads within an hour of completion tonight.

The Age quotes Dutch owners of the torrent site Mininova as saying, “Within an hour of this show airing in Sydney, a HD (high definition) version of the uncensored episode will be freely available for people to download via BitTorrent. This will allow everyone who wishes to view the episode as it was intended to be broadcast.”

Meanwhile, cheeky Seven is promoting the first episode of Lewis tonight as “the crime drama that can’t be stopped.” Touche.

  1. Neon, if you’re just using a basic PC then you’re correct, but there are definately hardware solutions available to get it done – as that’s what they do at my work 🙂

Generally however on torrents the SD version is released first, and the HD version is released a few hours later.

  2. What is this about ‘Illegal’? It has screened or will screen on FREE to air, how can downloading free to air stuff be illegal? Get with the times. Movies are ILLEGAL to download, not made for TV stuff. It is the way of the future.

  3. Wow, they expect a HD copy of the show to be on torrent sites within an HOUR of airing?

Whatever this PC is that they’re using to edit and encode two hours of HD content to a h.264 file inside an hour, it must be one HELL of a PC!

(Encoding HD usually would take at least a few hours even on a powerful multi-core PC)
