Pacific shoot stops a city

Melbourne’s Flinders St railway station became part of World War II this weekend as Steven Spielberg’s The Pacific blocked off a city street for shooting.

The 10-part HBO blocked Flinders Street to traffic between Spencer and Queen streets from Friday evening until early Sunday morning.

Around 170 extras were decked out in 1943 period costume, in scenes that depicted marines arriving in Melbourne after fighting at Guadalcanal.

Vintage trams trundled back and forth along the street as extras pretended to smoke cigarettes or lick “icy creams” and mock newsstands sold copies of the Australian Women’s Weekly from February 1943.
