Peter Meakin and the little penguins of Manly

Seven news boss Peter Meakin is to offer public relations services to a penguin preservation campaign run by Manly Environment Centre, as part of his community service order.

Meakin was order to perform 250 hours of community service for his third DUI breach, which occurred in October.

The Daily Telegraph reports the placement is supposedly beneficial for the hardworking staff at the centre. Within weeks of Meakin beginning his once weekly community service, Seven’s Friday night news covered an “exclusive” on the plight of the little penguin in the Manly area.

“The work is most rewarding but I do not want it to be subjected to media scrutiny as it could jeopardise the placement,” Meakin reluctantly told Confidential.

“I’m certainly not doing it for my own glory.”

A spokeswoman from the Manly Environment Centre said Meakin’s efforts had so far been “extremely helpful”.

“The placement scheme is very important to us and we have had great success with it over the years,” she said.
