SBS drops outsourcing broadcaster

SBS has dumped plans to outsource its broadcasting facility via UK broadcast facility Red Bee Media.
In 2006 SBS embarked upon a process to assess how best to replace its aging broadcasting facilities. Red Bee Media was selected in 2007 to provide outsourced services for elements of its television broadcast system, including digital media management and playout of its channels.
But today SBS announced it would not continue with Red Bee after failing to reach agreement.
SBS says it will continue to examine other available options to update its television broadcast system.

The proposal to outsource elements of SBS’s television broadcast system to Red Bee Media will not proceed.
Both parties have negotiated in good faith since the announcement in March 2007 that Red Bee Media had been selected as preferred supplier to provide outsourced television broadcast services to SBS.
However, Red Bee Media and SBS were unable to come to an agreement that was satisfactory to both parties. As a result, a decision to end contract negotiations has been taken.
SBS will continue to examine other available options to update its television broadcast system.

Actually, Red Bee don’t play it out yet – they still do it themselves, meaning just the opposite, that outsourcing would seem a very good idea !
So are going to have to wait even longer for a proper HD channel then.

Given the regularity of automation cock-ups in the past few weeks (ads cutting off mid-way through, programs returning mid-way through a sentence, incorrect on-screen graphics, wrong aspect ratio on ratings warning, etc etc), Red Bee is either completely incompetent when it comes to playout or, maybe, they just don’t care any more.
