So what’s happened to Top Gear?

Several fans of Top Gear have been asking why SBS has switched Top Gear (7:30pm Mondays) with Mythbusters (7:30pm Saturdays), so I thought I would address this for all to read.

SBS advises while it will screen first run eps of Top Gear at 7:30pm from this Saturday, these are actually older, “vintage” eps from 2002.

Mythbusters, it claims, is also a better fit with the new episodes of South Park, airing at 8:35pm Mondays.

‘Series 1’ of Top Gear with presenters Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and Jason Dawe followed the show’s relaunch in 2002 (it originally began in 1977). This is, however, Dawe’s only series to appear as a presenter on Top Gear. James May joined in 2003.

Celebrity guests this series include Jamiroquai’s Jay Kay, Status Quos’ Rick Parfitt, Jonathan Ross and Gordon Ramsay.

  1. Rudi, SBS advises Billie Piper didn’t appear in the edition that was delivered to them. There is a chance her appearance was already edited out in the UK.

  2. Hi David,

I’m looking forward to the ‘vintage’ episodes of Top Gear. Like Slydoggie, I think Saturday night is a poor choice.

In any case, I think SBS have a nerve to start the ‘vintage’ episodes when they have a new series they are yet to show.

Monday night’s show here, was the last of series 9 – which went to air in the UK a year ago – that’s already vintage. And – why did they edit out Billie Piper as the ‘star in a reasonably priced car’?

Series 10 has already screened in the UK – from October to December – so I think SBS could get on with that during the ratings season – ie, now.

And, last shot while I’m here, I think the idea of an Australian version of the show sucks (sorry, there’s no other word for it).

  3. This reeks of a Channel Nine programming department! Leave Top Gear where it is!! I didn’t watch when it switched to Saturday nights as I’m either out with friends or watching the Footy on TEN. I hardly think viewers of Mythbusters are going to be the same as those who enjoy the comedic stylings of Trey Parker and Matt Stone anyway.
