Axed: The L Word

“L” is for last as US cable network Showtime announces the sixth and final season of the once-controversial prime time drama headed by west-coast lesbians, The L Word.

Eight episodes have been ordered for an early 2009 premiere, down from the usual 13. Showtime executives and series creator/executive producer Ilene Chaiken believed that eight additional episodes were creatively what was needed to wrap up the story lines.

The series debuted in January 2004 with include Jennifer Beals and Mia Kirshner. It has continued with a loyal audience, including online and in Second Life. Fans have also participated in the plot construction for the series, and will play a part in wrapping up the series’ story lines.

In Australia the Seven Network aired two series, and the long overdue third series is due to air on the Movie Extra channel at 9:30pm on March 30th.
