Big Mouths for Big Brother

Network TEN has signed Sydney radio duo Tony Squires and Rebecca Wilson to host a new weeknight panel show for its Big Brother franchise, to be known as Big Mouth.

Squires, best known for the ABC sports panel show The Fat, co-hosts a radio show with Wilson on Vega, alongside Mikey Robins.

According to the Daily Telegraph the new show is slated for a 9:30pm weeknight slot (the new Panel?). It’s certainly an interesting move given the 2008 series will already be headed up by Austereo radio hosts Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O. Must be management at Austereo none too pleased with this signing.

Big Mouth, has been operating in the UK since 2005. Its format sees a studio audience of fans and two celebrity guests discuss the latest happenings in the Big Brother House, while viewers are able to contribute via phone, e-mail, text polls, or by leaving a message on the 24-hour ‘Mouthpiece’ rant line. Viewers were also invited to send in their views via mobile phone video messaging. In the last UK series the show aired four nights a week with a series of guest presenters hosting the show for weekly stints.

This year there is no Big Brother Up Late but there has been talk of a return to an Uncut style show. TEN also promised spin-offs of its flagship series on TEN HD, but so far none has eventuated for SYTYCDA or Biggest Loser, two of the shows it mentioned.

  1. I was regular viewer of The Fat when it was on the ABC. It was a great fast paced show and Tony Squires was a great host. What happened it moved to Seven, changed the name to 100% Tony Squires and was soon axed. Much like what happened to Good News Week. That was disappointing.

Now Tony Squires is making is return to TV with this rubbish. C’mon Tony you are above this. I want to hear your views on sports not on what happening inside bloody Big Brother house!!!

  2. Wow, not only are they killing any remaining respect the show held under Gretel Killeen by having it be hosted by Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O, but now to drag it in the dirt then drown it with Tony Squires and Rebecca Wilson..

I hope this series is so bad and so unwanted by Melbourne audiences that TEN Melbourne opt-out halfway through the series.

I agree the show needed change if if was to continue, but it’s gone so far in all the wrong direction.. they may as well just simulcast it on the radio. lol

  3. New spin-offs or not, if it still has a bunch of talentless nobodys sitting around a house doin nothin for 3 months, its still just disposable TV.
I can usually respect the context of any show but I guess everyones got that one show that really bugs the hell out of em, and for me its BB.
I remember a few years back there was a lot of talk about what the show was trying to achieve, and the laughable excuse came up that it was some sort of “social experiment”, analyzing behaviors and relationships what not, so after all these years, Im still waiting for the findings and conclusions of this “social experiment” hah!

  4. Well, didn’t this come from left field? This beats the other surprises they’ve had recently (public choosing housemates, replacing Gretel with Kyle and Jackie O) hands down.

The new producer is either really, really smart or really, really stupid!

  5. As a long term BB watcher, I’m going to really, really miss “Up Late” and I know the vast majority of the hardcore fans will, too. It sounds like the show is heading towards being barely recognisable this year, which could be a good thing for the general public, but could alienate the older viewers. Before anyone says that no one over 30 watches the show, you only have to check out the forums to realise that it has a huge audience in the 40+ age group…

  6. is this to be like The Insider that they tried with Tim Ferguson a few years back?

Could be an interesting development in the show, but it does seem that they are just hiring as many presenters as they can to cover for axing Gretel, and hoping viewers will attach themselves to at least one of them.

  7. Is show just once a week? The UK version is daily, but on their digital channel only.

I liked Tony Squires on the ABC’s The Fat, so I hope we get some interesting debates and discussions happening. I hope this means a new direction for Big Brother.

  8. It was advertised on Ten’s website (via a banner ad) that SYTYCD will have a spin-off called Club Dance but so far it hasn’t started.
