‘Binge’ interview for Carey

Andrew Denton is now on the publicity circuit enticing journos and viewers with what to expect in Monday’s return of Enough Rope.

“This is not the alpha male king, arrogant Wayne Carey that most football supporters know him as. This is a very vulnerable man who’s struggling,” Denton told The Age yesterday.

“My overriding impression was that he’s in a very, very difficult place and a very critical place for him, and I don’t think he realises yet how hard that’s going to be.

“He started the interview by saying something really surprising, which is that he’s been too embarrassed to leave the house. He’s actually been hiding — moving from house to house between friends and family so he didn’t have to be in public.

“If there’s a two-word summary for this interview, it’s the phrase of the moment: binge drinking. Wayne Carey, whether he likes it or not, is now the poster boy for what binge drinking does to people,” Denton said.

“He makes it very clear that he has an alcohol problem and he makes it very clear that the drugs have exaggerated that and accelerated that problem, and he doesn’t back away from that.

“He’s gone into counselling and I actually believe this interview is part of that process and that he is actually admitting publicly, as well as to himself, that he’s got problems.

“Usually, even with the toughest interviews there’s somewhere nice to go. But this was all hard. This was relentless and other than talking briefly about Ella, his little girl, there wasn’t much that wasn’t hard.

“I don’t think I’ve ever done one that was more emotionally volatile or more emotionally raw,” he said.

Enough Rope with Andrew Denton returns 9:30pm Monday on ABC1.

  1. So Carey allegedly abuses his girlfriend, abuses the Police, gets arrested in another country and he is expecting some sympathy because he has been afraid to go out in public?
Here’s a guy that has had all the opportunities in life, he had it all, and he threw it all away.
I don’t think there’s anything he could say that would excuse his treatment of Women over the years. A great footy player is not about just on field play, its also about the person he is as well. The only reason he feels bad is because the public found out about his crap, if the public didn’t know he would still be just as arrogant, rude and chauvinistic as he has reportedly been.
