Ain’t nothin like a good stoush. The Seven Network has accused Nine’s Today show of being a copycat of its Sunrise program after figures showed Nine was regaining ground in the breakfast ratings war.

Over the last five weeks the audience for Sunrise was down 1.7 per cent from the same time last year. Today, hosted by hosted by Lisa Wilkinson and Karl Stefanovic, gained 11.3 per cent.

Seven said it was unfazed by the figures, pointing out that it still had 50 per cent more viewers than Today.

“Today appropriates everything Sunrise does,” Seven’s director of corporate affairs Simon Francis told AAP.

“Sometimes, a competitor has to copy, and the audiences know which breakfast program sets the agenda – and that’s Sunrise.”

Sunrise has now held its position as the No 1 show for 182 consecutive weeks, its Morning Show which follows has been the leader for 33 weeks straight.

But Seven hasn’t detailed exactly how Nine has copied Seven’s breakfast fare.

Mr Francis said Nine’s results had been inflated by the cricket, and that Seven’s position would be boosted after Easter with new series such as City Homicide and Packed To The Rafters, and by the Beijing Olympics.

Nine later hit back, saying Sunrise was going backwards.

“In reference to Seven’s comments, one of those breakfast programs is going backwards and one is making huge inroads heading forwards,” a Nine spokeswoman said. “No prizes for guessing which one – it’s the Today show.

“Seven prefers to talk history rather than currency and the fact is the Today show is on a roll.”

  2. I don’t have channel 9 here (win showing 7 programs instead) so for me it is Sunrise or nothing…so I listen to the radio in the morning. I would prefer cardboard Karl any day to Mel and Koshie.

  3. In my view, Today show has definitely copying some stuff from Sunrise. People here have really short memories. Today show has definitely changed since they replaced Steve with Karl, etc. And they did it because of the success of Sunrise and not because somebody thought it needed changing. I can’t believe how many people here are so Ch 9 biased. I don’t watch Sunrise either, but we should give them the credit for changing the format of the morning show first.

  5. I would have to agree with knoxoverstreet. I still prefer watching the Today show than Sunrise.. Today show is certainly going up whereas Sunrise is going down.. Just give up 7, your boring and bland.. in regards to nine copying seven, where is the proof in that statement.. I don’t think they have any.. and for the hosts for sunrise I find them annoying esp Koshie (or whatever his name is, I don’t really care) his laughter and his talking gets under my skin..

  6. I honestly think if Today moved to Melbourne it would make an even bigger point of difference for the show, but of course that’ll probably upset the Sydney audience and will make things difficult for Lisa with uprooting her family (I have a feeling she already had to do that once?).

  7. The Nine spokeswoman is 100% correct The Today Show is on the up while the appeal of Sunrise is starting to fade. Kind of how the Nine & Seven networks are going generally. And as with Leckies remarks recently it reveals Seven are extremely concerned about it’s dying ratings. Shouldn’t be too long before The Today Show and Nine are back on top.

  8. Kochy is okay I guess, he can be a bit of a smart arse and its okay, I cant stand Stefanovich, he is so conservative its sickening (I guess Kochy is too but he has a bit of a liberal streak)
    Lisa, hmm well she doesnt really make a memorable impression, and as for MEL arrrghhhH!!!! I cant stand her, she is SOOO overly Politically Correct, sooo patronizing and so bad at acting concerned. I remember once a few weeks back they were talking about washing clothes and Mel made this remark that when she hosts “dinner parties” she changes clothes two or three times during the party, and oh man… that just said so much to me about her, she also made a comment about how the “help” at her place cut the onions not to her satisfaction!! MY GOD!!! How out of touch with the regular viewer can she be!!
    I reckon when the day comes in the future and Sunrise changes form and she gets left on the side of the road she will have one of those Womans Day, TV Week breakdowns lol, you know the “I was addicted to panadol” kind of situations and she would praise some family member for helping her pull thru this true disaster hah.
    And when those kind fo hosts branch out and host other shows (like that where are they now thing and her go at The Zoo) it just reminds me of Frontline and Mike Moore hosting that clips show making sure you can see his legs. (one of the selling points for him to do the show hah)
    And whats with her squinting?? Is she sitting in front of a window while the sun comes up and it hurts her eyes!! okay, Im being a bit trivial now but she does annoy the hell out of me, they should get that Nat lady to host it, shes funny and pretty hot too lol,
