Comfortably Away to be herself

Former Home and Away actor Kylie Watson (centre) who played lifeguard Shauna Bradley from 2000 – 2002, has spoken about how being television star prohibited her from being open about her sexuality.

“I did make a conscious decision to not be outed,” she told Cherrie magazine. “My agents at the time suggested it would be a good idea not to say anything about it and also you don’t just consider yourself, you consider people around you, like your partner and their family and friends.

“I’ve never made a point of letting people know about my sexuality because I’ve never thought it was relevant, but it’s who I am and I’m not ashamed of it,” she said.

“However in saying that, I think in this particular day it’s a lot easier to be identified as a not-so-straight woman particularly with the The L Word series out where it’s glamorised if you like; it’s almost a bit of a fad like we’re in fashion.”

These days Watson runs a successful interior design company, with no plans to return to acting. “If Ilene Chaiken called me and said, ‘You can have a full-time role on the The L Word’, I’d do that!” she joked.

  1. The afterlife pfft!! No such thing, I died once in hospital for 6 minutes and I didnt see no afterlife, all I saw was fire and people talking in low mumbling voices, what a crock!

    😛

  2. When an entire town turns against a girl for losing her faith you have to wonder what’s going on in Summer Bay.

Not to mention Sally’s whole “I saw the afterlife and got the chance to go to heaven,” is the icing on the cake.

Sad to see H&A fall into religiosity.

  3. On what ground would H&A be canned? for out-rating is competition too well? simply dimissing the show because it’s all too one-way is a bit of an oversight – how many TV’s shows really are diverse? i dont think ull find too much diversity on CSI or even Neighbours

II there’s no athiest bashing – as an athiest myself iv come to accept that for TRUE diversity u need to hear both sides n H&A has been sorly lacking more religious characters – Annie’s dilemma the other week was a fair storyline – she was sorting through her faith after a series of mishaps and was wondering where was god to help them – a fair question for a young girl

if actors choose not to come out then thats fine, but if the networks force them to cover it up,then there’s an issue – but why the hell would a show be canned because of what publicists say?

  4. Actually tonight one character said, and I quote:

    Boy: Are you Catholic?
Girl: Yes, better than being nothing, right?
    Boy: yeah, right

So I guess Atheist bashing is now common place on the show. Over the last month everyone in the town has been verbally bashing a young girl for losing her faith. Seems people aren’t allowed to be non-believers in Summer Bay anymore.

If this is fine writing, no wonder our dramas are an embarrassment to the world.

  5. They have characters accepting God and going to church? I might start watching this show now. Finally some pro-Christianity television on primetime TV. Tell the world that Jesus lives

  6. *sigh* Going to church?
Although it won’t happen guaranteed the presence of the ocean and a-hundred-and-one tanned teens/twentysomethings, I’d really like to see this show canned. They do nothing on the diversity level and the stories are reckless and stupid.

Whilst the government vehemently attempts to convince are a multi cultural country, everyone else seems to silently denying it just as passionately.

I wonder if Seven won’t let H&A stars come out until they complete shooting, see Tim Campbell.

  7. Not surprising. Home and Away is notorious for lacking a recurring gay character without making them also homicidal/psychopathic (Summer bay stalker was a lesbian), aggressive, or a homewrecker (Gypsie).

Now the show has all these characters accepting god and going to church.
