Nine’s Moment of Truth: 844,000

This morning was a Moment of Truth for the Nine Network when it received disappointing figures for the US game show of the same name.

It only scored 844,000 viewers.

In comparison It Takes Two averaged 1.28m across its 90+ minutes, and The Biggest Loser averaged 1.1m and Bondi Rescue 1.3m viewers.

Even the 7:30 Report was higher at 911,000 viewers.

Most importantly, in a week where Nine would love to win the tie-breaking fifth week of ratings, it contributed to the network coming third behind TEN.

By running with the US version first, Nine has now raised serious questions over whether to continue with the promised local version of the show -but at the same time testing the waters has probably saved it some expense. It will certainly be a challenge for local producers to market a show around “lying Aussies.” We’re a lot shyer than Americans when it comes to this sort of stuff.

The Tuesday slot remains a challenge for Nine. Monster House premiered to 793,000 viewers before being dropped at 632,000.

At least Nine has two weeks of non-ratings coming should it decide to let the show settle. TV Tonight tips it won’t be there by April 1 (and let’s avoid any puns regarding that date, shall we?).

Let’s hope they don’t slug poor Steve Jacobs with the task of coming to their rescue with Power of Ten there, he’s had no support act help!

  1. Terminator is one of the best new shows on our screens!! It is a damn shame it is being but on so late at night…. I am a night person so it doesnt bother me but i know a lot of people that are ready for bed by that time..

Also i think our ratings system is shit anyway!! How can they possibly predict what the country is watching when they only sample a comparitively small number of households.
1 actual household = thousands of “predicted” households

  2. Terminator, as in the movies lost me after the first one, in the immortal words of Frontlines Mike Moore “I liked it when he was the baddie”

I watched it for the first time last night and I ended switching over too Channel two about fifteen mins in.

  3. This one was a vile, nasty little piece of trash and was always going to be. Seems like Australian viewers, despite their obsession with celebrity gossip and scandal, couldn’t give a toss about the private lives of Joe and Jill Average (unless of course they’ve committed some sort of heinous crime 🙂

Unbelievably, the production company behind this was “Lighthearted Television”. Seriously!

J Bar, as for Terminator, hey, it just got its timeslot shifted at short notice afte being pulled for a week for no good reason. What did you think would happen? No, they should NOT pull it, they should air the episodes they have for the *hundreds of thousands* of viewers who are following the story.

Surely they don’t expect the magic million at 9.40pm?

  4. I’m with you Bilbo – it seems like Australians are voting with their remotes for some positive programmes, rather than this negative dross.

The sooner it gets canned, the better!

  5. Ahh thanks Ro, I gathered the questions were determined before as they mirrored there career and relos, but didnt know about the before hand lie detector, cheers!!
    🙂

  6. But people, do we really need or want TV like this.

Take me back to happier and better tv viewing!!!

    The D-Gen, Comedy Company, Skippy, Flipper…Kingswood Country…E Street(Just joking..slap)

What about some good wholesome TV like chances, Young Doctors…hahahaha.. I know.. Long day

  7. Dree: They have already been tested with 50+ questions under polygraph conditions and they are asked the same questions during the show.

The anxiety of being on tv etc means it wouldn’t be possible for them to do it on stage in front of an audience.

The questions are well researched beforehand by interviewing friends, family, workmates and ex-mates 🙂

I wouldn’t go out of my way to watch, but if they did a version with our politicians I’d definitely be in 🙂

  8. oh!! and BTW, call me dumb (its the net I’m sure many will!) but when was a lie detector invented that has no wires and can give a result in 5 seconds?
Are they using speech? Well that dont work, Body language?
You’d think this kind of long range wireless groundbreaking technology could be used in court rooms and on the political trail.

  9. Billbo 🙂

    Intelligence 🙂

Sorry, it was just so obvious 😛

I wonder how long this show will air now? I was thinking there would be TT reports and Media watch segs on it, guess it was just a whimper then.

  10. I watched a bit of it, and it wssn’t that bad as people make out. I think the mistake for Australians is how annoying it is watching the usual over the top Americans!

It’s the type of show you leave your brain at the door and just watch it for pure entertainment (yes people can watch tv to be entertained!). It doesn’t help that Nine aired it in their death timeslot! I think this type of light fluff would air better later in the week and probably pair better with Funniest Home Videos!

I don’t think people realise this is based on a hit Columbian show format that has been exported has been exported to 20+ countries. The UK version is already in it’s second series.

Nine have bought the rights to the format too but with those ratings it’s doubtful it will get any further.

  11. Thank you people of Australia.

When are these TV Stations going to realize, that we are not like the Americans.

We actually would like tv viewing with some intelligence. And not how can we destroy your life.

Please let us not sink to the same level or intelligance as the American viewers.
