‘Pivotal’ criticisms aimed at TEN judge

Ahh there’s nothing like a bit of controversy on reality television, even if it’s unfounded, made up or exaggerated. It still makes for good press, right?

SYTYCD judge Jason Coleman is under fire for erroneous comments and for supposedly favouring one choreographer over others.

“He makes mistakes; he calls a pivot a promenade and they are two different movements,” a dancer said.

But Coleman laughed off the accusations, saying: “Mate, this is just nit-picking. With this show a pivot is the same thing as a promenade.

“In my world it’s called a promenade, in the ballroom dancing world it’s called a pivot. I’m aware of the differences but I don’t have time in my minute-and-a-half speech to explain that.”

There are also question marks that he is favouring choreographer Kelly Aykers, with whom he runs the Ministry of Dance Studio in Melbourne.

“Quite a few people, not just me, know that with Jason there is always an agenda,” the source claimed. “It’s clear he has his favourites for certain reasons.

“It’s interesting he seems to favour Kelly, especially as she is going to help him with his Melbourne studio.”

But the comments fail to acknowledge two points: one is that he has also praised other choreographers (it’s not an either / or situation), and that the judges are not there to judge the choreographers. Indeed Coleman, who has a formidable resume in choreography, has been seen to commend ‘good dancers’ in ‘bad routines.’

Coleman denied there was a conflict of interest, despite again heaping praise on Aykers routine last Sunday, while slamming several of the show’s other choreographers.

“I call a spade a spade, I’m not blowing smoke up anybody’s ass,” Coleman said.

“Kelly Aykers has delivered three great routines. I would never put myself in a position where I would compliment a person’s work because they are my friend.

“If the work deserves a compliment it will receive it, if it does not, it will not.”

  1. Jason Coleman is such a spunk, Is he gay someone said he is. in fantasy land i hope he’s straight. if i were going to turn gay though it would be for Natalie. I have always loved Natalie from Rogue Trader. hehe

  2. goodness… homophobic???? Because someone is (apparently) gay (ie. Is he?), means that he is above criticism?

Though as I said in my initial comment I don’t think much of this alleged story, IMO this is just routine PR to the papers with not a lot of substance to it, and not to read too much into it.

  3. Regardless of what the papers say, he’s a good critic and this is an enjoyable show. Sure, it’ll’ probably get tiresome 2 or 3 seasons down the line, but for now, I make a point to record it every Sunday and Monday night (I can’t watch it live…too many ads!)
