Sam Newman in cancer surgery

Sam Newman, 62, has been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

He was operated on this morning.

At this early stage doctors do not know if the cancer has spread to other parts of his body, or whether they were able to get to it all this morning.

“There’s just nothing you can do about it,” Newman said.

“We’re going to ask probably the best man in the business to do something about it and he’s going to do this best.”

“And if that’s good enough or if … we’ll just have to wait and see what he says.”

Newman was given the devastating news about three weeks ago. Only family and a small number of friends were aware of his condition.

To raise the awareness of prostate cancer, Newman allowed a Sixty Minutes crew to film the moment.

The Nine Network released a statement saying “The Network was fully behind Sam in his battle to overcome this debilitating illness and that it was our collective hope and prayer that Sam would return to good health as soon as possible.”

The Footy Show is due to return to Nine on Thursday March 13.

Press Release:

The Nine Network tonight confirmed that John ‘Sam’ Newman has today undergone surgery for prostate cancer, having been diagnosed approximately three weeks ago.

Nine Network Executive Director and GTV9 Managing Director Jeffrey Browne said Sam is resting in hospital and recuperating after the operation this morning. Nine is unable to elaborate any further on his condition at this stage.

Mr Browne said that the Network was fully behind Sam in his battle to overcome this debilitating illness and that it was our collective hope and prayer that Sam would return to good health as soon as possible.

“Sam is a revered and much-loved person at GTV9 and the greater Nine Network. He is facing this challenge with typical defiance and does so with the entire Nine family in his corner,” Mr Browne said.

Sam has requested his privacy be respected at this difficult time, and has asked that flowers and tributes not be sent or made.

  1. Although I find this guy an A-Grade arrogant arsehole, I don’t wish him ill will if only for his family’s sake

I do belive it’s a pretty common operation these days and as long as it’s found early enough should make a full recovery.

It will be interesting to see if 60 minutes sensationalise it or actually turn it into a public awareness campaign.

  2. Although I’m not a fan of Sams you can’t wish cancer on anybody I hope he recovers and gets back to his rude abrasive self very soon the footy show wouldn’t be the same without him.
