Ticker runs out on Today

The Australian today reports that Nine’s Today show will drop its on-screen ticker:

Today executive producer Tom Malone believes it is a distraction and any content which appears on the bottom of the screen in the ticker will be on the show anyway.

The ticker was pioneered on breakfast television by Seven’s rival Sunrise, and was later adopted by Nine.

  1. Damn right they’re a distraction. I notice that lately, Sunrise has been removing theirs for performances by visiting pop stars. Presumably they or their management didn’t like the idea of happy pop songs being sung whilst the ticker told tales of rape and death 🙂

Sunrise’s Boland, of course, nicked the idea from the USA. And he really, really needs to get the damn thing off “The Nightcap”. It doesn’t matter how many “fun facts” he throws in there, it doesn’t belong.

Great move by Today’s producers and Nine, this.

Matthew, the reason there’s so much blank background on the tickers is to keep the actual text visible on old-school tube TVs with massive overscan. And of course those of us with full-HD flat-panel displays suffer (not to mention the ticker graphics are all SD, kind of distracting when the in-studio picture is crystal-clear HD!)
