Unhappy dancers question format

Here we go again. Evicted dancers from SYTYCDA are quoted today as complaining that the show’s structure has forced performers to do routines they are not well suited to.

“I have had a lot of people tell me they’re shocked I was eliminated because I was the only contemporary jazz dancer who knew about technique,” said Marko Panzic, who was eliminated last week.

“When Hilton got thrown out in the second week I realised that talent and technique meant nothing, that this really was a reality TV show.”

Eliminated dancer Stephanie Golman said that she and Panzic had to dance unfamiliar styles, while others did routines in their usual genres.

“We were given really silly styles, with Swap (a combination of swing and hip hop) and Krump (aggressive hip hop) – and that was not good for us,” she said.

But executive producer Cathy Scott defended the show’s structure: “The public vote determines the bottom three couples, which has included some of the perceived best dancers,” she said. “This makes the decision for the judges incredibly difficult.

“And the format of the show requires the dance genres picked by the couples each week (for elimination) to be done randomly – literally picked out of a bowl.

“Some are fortunate to get genres that they are familiar with, and others haven’t been as fortunate.”

Judges Jason Coleman, Bonnie Lythgoe and Matt Lee were also criticised for inconsistency.

“Bonnie wasn’t giving us as much about the performance as how we looked and what the performance was about – not so much anything about the technique,” complained Sermsah Bin Saad, who was eliminated on Monday night’s show.

Both Bin Saad, from Port Hedland, and Adelaide’s Brougham praised the program for celebrating dance and educating viewers.

  1. I am SO fed up with all the “Hip Hop” routines that they are forced to do … it is wrong that they have to do one every week and that sometimes the same couple get forced to do this lame and unimpressive “style” of dance … they may as well be doing Break Dancing for that matter … Hip Hop does NOT belong in a competition where we have so many great dancers who never get the chance to really “fly” in that category. It just looks lame!
    Jack!

  2. When I was a kid and played football, if someone acted like this we called em a sore loser. Its everybody else’s fault but his dancing ability 😛 I dont watch the show but I thought I’d drop my 2 cents in 😛

  3. It’s a reality TV competition people! Favourites will stay above perceived better dancers, we’re voting for our favourite dancer not the best dancer.

And this nonsense complaining about being given styles not suited to them – um hello, what show did you think you were going on? It wasn’t a surprise that you would be asked to complete routines not at all in your genre – get over yourself.

You lost, you were voted out, suck it up and deal and maybe walk away with grace and dignity – nobody celebrates the whiner ex-contestants.
