Airdate: Canal Road

Channel Nine’s new drama, Canal Road will launch in just a fortnight’s time.

It will screen on Wednesday nights (as previously tipped) from April 16.

In its hometown Melbourne, the drama screens at 8:30pm where Underbelly would have been. However, around the rest of country it will follow the gangster drama in the 9:30pm timeslot. An M classification applies for both times.

The back to back screenings of first-run, locally made, hour-long drama is a powerhouse move by Nine. It must be the first time in recent memory a network has programmed local drama so formidably. Normally flagship productions are stretched out over the course of a year, and it comes on top of the network launching Sea Patrol this week, too.

A drama / thriller, Canal Road stars Paul Leyden, Brooke Satchwell and Sibylla Budd. It is described as ” a series about love, lies and a murder / mystery where one man seeks answers and revenge after the death of his wife and son.”

In Melbourne Nine follows the premiere with a 9:30pm movie Anger Management.

Nine still has a final series of McLeod’s Daughters left in its war chest.

Press Release:

The next great Australian drama series is a murder mystery from the network that unleashed Underbelly: CANAL ROAD an intriguing world of sex, lies, deception and manipulation that starts Wednesday, April 16 on Channel Nine.

CANAL ROAD is a thriving medical and legal centre where the lives of inner-city professionals and their colourful cast of patients intersect. At the heart of the series are the tragic deaths of the wife and son of central character Spencer McKay. Spencer is the centre’s psychiatrist who is confronted by the killer of his loved ones and sets out on a journey of revenge which will implicate friends, workmates and his darkest demons.

NIDA graduate Paul Leyden (Dragnet, LAX, Law & Order: SVU) has returned from the United States to take the lead role of Spencer McKay. Joining him are Diana Glenn (The Oyster Farmer, Satisfaction), Brooke Satchwell (Tripping Over, Dangerous), Grant Bowler (Outrageous Fortune, Through My Eyes), Sibylla Budd (The Secret Life of Us), Charlie Clausen (McLeod’s Daughters, Blue Heelers), Patrick Brammall (Home and Away, The Alice), Peta Sergeant (Satisfaction, All Saints) and dynamic newcomers Alyssa McClelland (Small Claims) and Sam Anderson.

The staff at CANAL ROAD all have secrets, some dark and dangerous, others light and humorous. CANAL ROAD is the crucible where these secrets collide. Where friendships and loyalties are tested. Where mysteries bubble to the surface. And where skeletons from the past return to haunt people.

“We are immensely proud of CANAL ROAD,” said Jo Horsburgh, Nine Network’s Head of Drama. “It is a very different production and the perfect complement to our diverse stable of home-grown drama series, with Underbelly achieving phenomenal success, together with new seasons of Sea Patrol and McLeod’s Daughters and soon Scorched, The Strip, and Young Doctors all set to air on Nine.”

CANAL ROAD is produced by the Nine Network under the creative leadership of producer Susan Bower, in collaboration with writers Sarah Smith, John Ridley and Dave Warner. CANAL ROAD was filmed at Channel Nine’s GTV Studios and on location in and around Melbourne.
