Airdate: Price is Right (US)

Drew Carey, come on down!

America’s longest running game show, The Price is Right is to screen on Aussie television on the W Channel.

Carey replaced Bob Barker last year after his staggering 35 year stint. There had been talk Rosie O’Donnell might take the gig, but alas, it didn’t work out. The show has long been an audience pleaser (and no doubt a local version will rotate back at some point).

For game show addicts, the US version has 80 different games. You can catch the first episode from Monday May 5 at 6:10pm on the W Channel.

Press Release:

Come on down to THE PRICE IS RIGHT, the longest running game show in television history!

Premiering for the first time on Australian television on May 5, the latest season of the iconic American game show welcomes the hugely popular comic-turned-actor DREW CAREY to the coveted hosting role.

Carey replaces long-time host Bob Barker, who collected a whopping 17 Daytime Emmy Awards during his 35 years on the show.

First airing on American television in 1956, THE PRICE IS RIGHT features an eager audience of contestants all vying for the chance to be plucked from the audience and compete to win thousands of dollars worth of prizes.

More than 80 individual games, each with their own rules, are rotated on the show. Some games involve pricing groceries or everyday items; others involve chance, deduction, skill and patience. Many of the games have become audience favourites, with contestants champing at the bit to play Plinko, Ten Chances, Cliff Hangers, Any Number, Grocery Game and many more.

During its early days THE PRICE IS RIGHT had a reputation for the most outlandish prizes, including houses, business franchises, animals (including an elephant!), aeroplanes and bit parts in movies.

And the bloopers that have occurred on show are among the most celebrated in television history. At the beginning of an episode in 1978, a woman wearing a tube top was invited to ‘Come on Down!’ and ran fast enough for the tube top to slip down. (Barker quipped: “She came on down and they came on out!”).

Drew Carey is a stand-up comic turned actor and producer who had the distinction of having two hit shows running simultaneously: the long-running comedy The Drew Carey Show (currently airing on FOX Classics), and the improve/sketch show Whose Line Is It Anyway? (currently airing on The Comedy Channel) on which he was host and a producer.

THE PRICE IS RIGHT has its Australian premiere on Monday, May 5 and will air weekdays at 6.10pm. Exclusive to W.
