ASTRA Awards: The winners

The ASTRA Awards have been held tonight in Sydney with wins for Antonia Kidman, Jimmy Barnes, Claudia Karvan, Stephen Curry, The King, Australia’s Next Top Model, High School Musical 2, The Riches and Stuart McGill Uncorked.

Kidman, the host of From Here to Maternity, took out the favourite female personality at the ASTRA Awards for the second year running.

The awards are considered to be the pay TV equivalent of the Logies.

Kidman beat personalities such as Maggie Tabberer, Australia’s Next Top Model judge Charlotte Dawson and Sky News presenter Helen Dalley for the award.

Two other top gongs went to two celebrities better known outside the TV arena.

Legendary rocker Jimmy Barnes took out the favourite male personality for his performance at the Max Sessions, while veteran cricketer Stuart MacGill beat Kidman for most outstanding lifestyle program for his wine program Stuart MacGill Uncorked.

The three were among celebrities to walk the “black” carpet, along with A-listers Sarah Murdoch, Deborra-Lee Furness, celebrity chef Bill Grainger, Ita Buttrose and radio duo Merrick and Rosso.

The King, a telemovie about the life of Graham Kennedy, was one of the night’s big winners. Actor Stephen Curry, who played Kennedy, took out the most outstanding performance by an actor (male), while the telemovie also picked up most outstanding drama.

Love My Way lead Claudia Karvan took home the most outstanding performance by an actor (female), while the popular reality show Australia’s Next Top Model took out the favourite program award for the second consecutive year. High School Musical 2 was voted favourite international.

Pay TV station Fox8 was inducted into the hall of fame when it was named channel of the year.

Fox8, Sky News, Nickelodeon and TV1 picked up the most awards.

Brian McFadden and the boys from Billy Elliott the Musical joined local acts Lior, The Potbelleez, The McClymonts in performing for guests.

Barnes and his daughter Mahalia also took to the stage with a duet.

  1. Sure, a bit of kudos the first time around (7 years ago when its twin sister, “The secret life of the Magic School Bus” or whatever, debuted) but when it drags on and on, same thing and same praise, from high profile channel to niche network in the corner, it gets a bit repetitive, don’t you think?

And with that matter finished, its good to see the King getting most of the awards on the night, now that was a well-done production.

  2. Apparently rewarding legitimately GREAT aussie drama is a bad thing?

Love My Way is probably one of the only shows I would be proud to put up along side some of the best the US etc have to offer. It deserves all the kudos it gets.

  3. Does that mean everyone can finally get over their hardon for Love My Way? Please, we’ve established that Aussie TV and Film is fine without Claudia Karvan, so let’s move along please? Anybody?
