Darren and Tina join Idol hunt

Australian Idol has landed Darren Hayes and Tina Arena as judges for the UK leg of its audition search.

They will join with Dicko to search amongst expats living in the UK. He flies out with James Mathison tomorrow.

Kyle Sandilands, based in LA with girlfriend Tamara Jaber, host auditions in Hollywood with Andrew G. This marks the first acknowledgement that Andrew G is returning to the TEN juggernaut.

Darren Hayes told Confidential, “As an Australian entertainer living in London I definitely have a soft spot for Aussies trying to make it overseas.

“Rather than judging people, I’m going to be looking for that little bit of magic that someone once saw in me. I think potential is a huge criteria for a musical career and hopefully Tina and I can help discover some. I love Dicko and Tina so I’m sure I’m going to have a blast.”

Hayes also appeared on an Idol special last year to promote his Aussie tour.

  1. Tina Arena, whether you like it or not CONTINUES to sell here in Australia.

Where can you find an artist that goes out of the country for 5-6 years and coming back with an album barely promoted and landing surprisingly at #3 at the ARIA Charts? Yes. I am talking about her “Songs of Love & Loss” album which was released last december of 2007.

I’m not a big fan of hers but it’s the truth. Her bitchiness took her elsewhere and it’s all good. Tina will always be THE DIVA down under.

Darren and Tina would be PERFECT for the role of the judges. We are are talking about experience. They have it.

  2. Whatever the “reason” Darren moved overseas was, be it work related, or because he got married to an Englishman (and his marriage isn’t valid in Australia) is irrelevant. It certainly doesn’t mean that he doesn’t love his country. People move all the time for a whole host of reasons. As for the “racial slurs”, that incident was widely reported in the press, but many of them failed to print the fact that he was cleared. That wasn’t scandalous or sexy enough for print. I think record sales in excess of 20 million make him more than qualified to be a guest judge. There aren’t many idol judges around the world that can say that.

  3. I can’t believe Tina would be so hypocritical after coming from a show that exploited their young performers in a similar fashion. As those kids murdered your favourite songs, did anyone even believe they even knew what they were singing about?

Still she’s done well for herself after the show. If anything it shows that with dedication someone can come out of that type of environment and develop as an artist – only to sell out again! I guess that’s the music industry for ya!

  4. I have no doubt Hayes and Arena aren’t doing it for our music scene, theres a reason they moved overseas.
I hope Hayes doesnt start shouting racial slurs at the contestants!

  5. I actually think this is great. Despite what you may all think now, both Tina Arena and Darren Hayes are two Australian musicians who have really succeeded in the Australian music industry. Much more than any Australian Idol will. Ok, it was a few years ago now, but I am personally really excited to see what they can bring to the audition process – having actually had some experience ‘in it’ more recently than any of the musical judges who were in their prime long before Savage Garden or Tina Arenain the 90s.

Yes, they’re not massive here now, Tina moved to Paris, Darren moved to the US then the UK…but it’s great that we can now incorporate them back into the Aussie music scene (if we can stretch to call Aus Idol that) in this way.

I’m personally looking forward to it.

  6. Sigh! Again, it seems like this show is more about the hosts than the contestants, Darren Hayes is the Rob Riener of our Music Industry, Tina Arena barely sells in this country (thank France for her career) and having Kyle and his girlfriend in the US is like telling Larry Flynt to go to Rome and find religion.
At least Dicko knows his role. Where is Marcia going to be?
